maybe this can become a general q&a/guide of sorts, who knows

i read dmmarck hitchiker guide, and Cyber Warrior's how-to's... just had some general questions. i like to think that i am tech-savvy, but this dev/programmer stuff eludes me. so far, using CWM has been straightforward, but im feeling spongy and want to understand more about the process of customizing the gnex.

1. i rooted and installed AOKP since that was suggested by a friend. could i have just as easily flashed vanilla 4.0.4 ICS rom? is it the same basic process as flashing a custom rom?

2. i see that other ROMs are AOSP builds. is AOKP just another version of an AOSP build? im confused, because i know that vz doesnt publish its CDMA keys, so google doesnt really support toro in AOSP. so what does this mean - can i actually use AOSP roms like CM or liquid?

3. if i add a custom theme (ie black exodus), how do i revert to stock?

i will add more as i come up with them, but this is it so far.

thanks in advance

Yes, you can flash back and forth between stock and custom ROMs using the same process

Not sure if AOKP is an AOSP build or not, but AOSP won't directly build a CDMA ROM, the devs have to take the source and add the customizations to support CDMA and then include the proprietary binary files to support CDMA

I've never flashed a theme, but as I understand it, you just flash a new theme over it or flash the stock ROM to get the look you want.

Also, did you flash the updated radios, they aren't included in AOKP so if you didn't you still have the stock radios

if i understand this correctly, i cant get stock rom from google - for example, stock 4.0.4 AOSP rom: [AOSP] 4.0.4 Stock - [VZW] Galaxy Nexus Development - RootzWiki

but as long as someone creates a custom rom, i can run it no problems? so i can install something like liquid and not worry about a thing?

but then... if i cant get stock aosp 4.0.4 on CDMA, can i truly run stock?

yup, did that last night. zero neck's instructions were dumbed down enough for me ;-P

The stock ROM hasn't been posted yet (to my knowledge) but I'm sure it will be just like the previous 4.0.4 leak was. I'm also sure the devs will start incorporating all the goodness from this update into our custom ROMs too.

I am running liquid and have been for about the last two weeks i flashed the the new radios today and have not had a problem at all
