Hi all,

Switching back to Android and I wanted a larger phone. I actually ordered both the Nexus 6(great price now) and the MotoX Pure.

I can't keep both, and after testing them out, I keep coming back to the Nexus 6. I know the Moto is newer, the hardware inside is better, and it has some nice extra features. Its just there is still something about the Nexus 6...

Am I crazy if I decide to return the Moto and keep the Nexus? The new Nexus 6P looks nice but is a little too pricy for me.

What do you all think please?

Thanks

Unlikely to find anybody who disagrees with you in the N6 section. I think it's a great choice.

You aren't alone in this. I too returned the Moto X Pure and am keeping the Nexus 6.

Even after all the personalizations, the moto x never felt mine. The moto x definitely has newer hardware and the moto software additions were very good. I'll miss this though

The Nexus 6 felt like mine, so Nexus 6 for me.

You will only notice a difference using a benchmark app. You won't notice anything different speed-wise in real world usage. And actually, the N6 uses a slightly better GPU.

The 6P is ugly to me--I think it's the big bezels at the top and bottom. Also, the 6P doesn't have wireless charging and has a slightly smaller screen,

I think keeping the Nexus 6 was a good choice. It's a solid phone.

I completely agree!

The Motorola Nexus 6 is a great photo!

I also agree that the new Nexus 6 P is an ugly phone, and isn't much of an upgrade from the Motorola Nexus 6.

I returned the moto x pure and bought an N6 and think it's much better. Camera is the only place where N6 suffers vs the X. Battery is much better and the ease of customizing and flashing roms and updates is great. Sick with the N6 imo.

Thanks all,

I'm keeping the Nexus 6. The Moto X is very nice, but Shamu phone makes me smile.

Any suggestions on reasonable wireless chargers?

Not crazy at all. And everybody in here is probably gonna say the same. I returned the Moto X because the battery life was worse than the n6 and because it also got quite a bit hotter during normal chrome surfing. N6 battery isn't amazing or anything and it too gets warm but Moto X was worse. The X also stuttered where N6 was buttery

I did like the screen on the X a lot better, side by side it was no contest. And the grippy rubber felt so much nicer than the weird plastic shell of the n6.

You are not crazy! I too have this dilemma. :)

We all know the mainstream differences, so I'll spare the recap and just focus on the major differences...

I owned the Moto X 1st gen, 2nd gen, and now 3rd gen.
An android phone is an android phone unless it provides better AI(Artificial Intelligence).
But Here are the primary reasons I love the Moto X line: (which Motorola patented, and no one else has)

1) Moto Assist such as touchless wave to get notifications
2) Gestures: double twist for camera and double chop for flash light
3) Motion sensors on all 4 corners.

But I am seriously considering to switch to the Nexus 6P for the first time in 3yrs.
I too ordered the 6P BUT it must prove to be superior in ALL areas below: (otherwise, I'm staying with the X)

1) Sensor hub: Needs to wake upon touch (proves it can have AI against the X wave touchless). The blinking light is a plus.
2) Battery life: it has 450mA more, which is not huge but it is 1/6 more so that is substantial. It needs to live up to its 3450mA vs the 3000mA of X.
3) Double power button for quick camera on (to replace the double twist on the X)
4) 6P claims to have additional gestures (need to test to see what additional gestures are built in the 6P)
5) Camera: 1.5uM needs to prove it's superiority. (After all, 6P does not have front flash, which is a big negative. I didn't think the front flash was necessary until I needed to take a pic in low light condition with a dimm lit area and a background sign. My wife took a selfie with her Iphone 6(no flash) and I took a selfie with the X (with flash). The result was phenomenal, the Iphone was bright but super noisy. The X was perfect tone and balanced color, literally no noise.) In other words, the 6P needs to prove it's superiority against the X Pure at least in the no flash category(because 6P does not have front flash). Then it needs to come close against a front flash of the X.
6) Marshmellow better give better enhancements and longer battery life.

I will have to live without the double chop flash light, which is very convenience!

All in all, spec against spec is spec. Real life usage determine UI and ease of use.

In respect to looks, it's a matter of preference. I love the all metal feel but I also love the Moto maker to give the user the ability to choose.
I've chosen the wood back for the X 1st and 3rd gen, plastic for the 2nd gen, all are great.

The fingerprint sensor and LED notification light on the 6P are great additions.

That's all! Can't wait to see the Nexus 6P prove its superiority against the Moto X Pure!
All in all, price is pretty comparable so you can't go wrong with either but at this point I'm leaning on the 6P to prove itself.

Good luck!

Ok, after a week with the 6P and a month with MXPE, I'm keeping the MXPE and returning the 6P. Here are my findings after real life testings:

Moto X pros:
1) Moto assist, Moto action(gestures), Moto voice, and Moto display. This is by far the BEST thing about Moto phones.
2) The speaker and earphones are fuller, richer, and about 10% louder. It makes a huge difference when you're on the airplane where background noise is loud. I can barely hear the 6P but the X was loud and crisp.
3) The size of the X felt comfy in hand with its rounded back.
4) Low light video in the X is better.
5) IPS display is better in bright sunlight.

Moto X cons:
Still camera of the X is 10% less sharp, less accurate autofocus(hit or miss, not always), color rendition not as vivid as the 6P. I took tons of low light shots, then zoomed 100% and did the comparison. The results are undoubtedly 6P wins hands down. The sensor on the 6P is by far more superb.

Nexus 6P pros:
1) All metal build
2) WiFi calling.
3) Best still camera.
4) Fingerprint reader.
5) Notification light
6) Amoled display shows more contrast and sightly sharper.

Nexus 6P cons:
1) It is harder to hold, less friendly in hand as it's slightly wide and too long.
2) Double power is the only gesture to turn on camera.
3) Dark low light video had lots of artifacts (noise).
4) Speaker is 10% less loud and often distorts at max volume. Sounds more pitchy and less bass (lack in depth) in both speaker and earphones. Seems they use less quality sound HW.

Battery: Doze is a gimmick. Moto X battery management is the same as doze on standby of the 6P. I took both phones fully charged at midnight, wrote up at 7am, both had 98% left over. Although the 6P has 3450mA vs the X with 3000mA, I ran both same video playing back to back along with streaming videos, both has exactly same battery usage. So in terms of battery, IMO, they're both very similar in real life application.

Conclusion...
In my opinion,
1) Moto X size feels much better in hand.
2) Moto X has many Moto gestures.
3) Moto X radio and speaker is better.
3) 6P still camera is 10% better (better color rendition and better focus accuracy)
4) 6P has WiFi calling, Fingerprint reader, notification light.

Thus, I'm keeping the Moto X for the most essential of daily usage: friendly to hold, Moto features, and best sounds, with very acceptable camera and battery life. I'm sure 2016, Moto X will have the rest but by that time, I'm sure others will introduce something else again. I just wish Lenovo would think ahead for once. Peace!

Battery: Doze is a gimmick.

Nice comparison and good summarization for both phones. Moto X pure will soon receive Marshmallow as well.

I defer on the doze part though . It's not a gimmick, and you'll soon experience that. My Nexus 6 and 7 both have much higher idle time than on lollipop. I charged my Nexus 7 4 days back, and used it for reading the news every morning and then left it idle. This morning, it still had 67% left. In lollipop, it used to drain by this time with the same usage.

My Nexus 6 also never reaches below 10% nowadays with the same daily usage.

Nexus 6 on Android 6

Moto battery management is not lame. In real life application, Moto X goes into sleep mode also. It does shut off unused apps and background running sw. I tested this simply by charging max on both phones, go to sleep for 8hrs, woke up, both phones were at 98%. IMO, there's no difference from my test. If doze works better, it'll be a plus. Thanks.

I never said anything about moto battery management. Maybe it'll be even better with marshmallow.

I didn't get good battery life when I had it though, and there are lot of complaints about moto x battery life for almost all generations

Nexus 7 '13.... Android M

What I'm saying is, after normal usage and sleep test, the 6P and the X battery performed identical. No difference in daily usage and sleep mode. I tested both phones.

Yup, nexus 6 is now and will always remain sex on wheels among all nexi phones until they make a nexus phablet with duel facing speakers and a 6.1+" screen.

Anything smaller than 6" isn't a phone, it's a toy.
