Something is wrong! (Vladivostok?)

I bought my Evo just over two weeks ago, and I think I may have downloaded an infected app. The reason I say this is because on my home screen, in the time and weather widget, for some reason the phone thinks that I am in a place called Vladivistok, which is several hours ahead of my local time. When I tap on the widget and go to the world time, I see that my phone has automatically created a new place, and it has disabled the erasing of this new place. My phone is definitely infected.

What do I do now? I don't really want to delete everything in my phone, as I have close to 300 contacts that would be lost. Any help/advice is much appreciated!

I don't have it rooted, unless the recent malware rooted it, which I have read that it can do. I am taking it to a Sprint store today to have them do a factory reset on it. I had downloaded the infected chess app. :(

Google pulls Market apps with root exploit -- one patched in AOSP, but you probably didn't get it | Android Central

I read about that recently. The market removed 21 apps and that chess was one of them. Try to do the factory reset yourself before you go to Sprint.

best thing to do is take it to a Sprint Service Center, they will back up your contacts, and then they should run the RUU instead of just a hard reset. That way you for sure got rid of the "virus" You can back up your contacts to your memory card by going into people, pressing menu then export to SD. It will make a vcf file on your SD card with all of your contacts.

This is really a blow against the argument that only side loaded apps are vulnerable to viruses and malware. I really hope Google steps up its quality control in the market.

lol...Vladivostok is 4hrs West of Korea. It's on the East Coast of Russia, comrade. That sucks, but it's funny when you're outside looking in. I will never download a new app again. I will wait for a few weeks to see what happens to others first.

The Official Lookout Blog

The blog above may interest you, there's a lot about the infected apps, and what is happening. I wouldn't blindly accept their tone, the company has a vested interest in stirring up interest in their application and causing alarm, but I'm sure the facts are as accurate as they can be in a malware situation.

The March 1 and 2 posts will be especially interesting.

I had antivirus on it before downloading the chess app. It didn't detect it, or cleanse it.

that's the problem with anti-virus...n the phones, to keep it small nd not drain battery, they only use a virus or malware signature instead of Heuristics to detect...That's why I'll give an app a few weeks before downloading a brand new one from now on.

I have seen several posts by people saying their "location" in the weather widget is somewhere on the other side of the world; and their time is also off. It has been said that it is a Sprint issue.

Okay, I had my phone factory reset, and the issue went away for a few days. Now, it's telling me that I am in Vladivostok again. This problem is unacceptable. On the time and weather widget on the home screen, it shows the wrong time for my location and also tells me that I am in Russia.

I did not download ANY potentially infected apps since the phone was factory reset. Who do I contact about this? HTC? Sprint? Asurion?

I am beyond upset. Without the correct time, my phone won't wake me up at 4:30 in the morning, which is when I need to be up every morning.

Like I said, this is unacceptable.

I see that someone said it was an HTC update issue, while someone else said it was a Sprint issue.

Seriously? WTF? I spent a whole lot of money on this phone, and the thing is not even completely functional.

Thank you igotsanevo4g, but I don't exactly feel comfortable doing all of this. I don't know how to root, in fact, I really don't even know exactly what it means.

And also, the link for HTC Sync says that it is compatible with the Desire, Legend, Tattoo, Hero, and Magic. It says nothing about Evo. Also, it says Android 1.5, and I'm pretty sure that I am running Android 2.2.
