Sony Xperia 1 on AT&T after end of 3G

According to the official document on their Web site, https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf, the Xperia 1, model J8170, will work on AT&T with a software update. This is the phone my father uses, and I'd rather not have him upgrade as he is still very happy with it. Can someone advise me what the update is? Is it maybe already on there or is there something special required. And is there a way to confirm that we've done it right?

I’m sorry you’ve had no response. I don’t know what the update is but I can’t see any obvious reason for not accepting it.

I think it would make sense to contact AT&T directly to make sure all is correct and good to go.
