Sound coming from loudspeaker and not earphones only when calling (not listening to music)

Hi,
When I make calls (through WhatsApp, Messenger or just the phone app) with my wired earphones, the sound is coming from the phone speaker and not the earphones. Microphone works fine.
When I listen to the music, the sound is coming from the earphones as expected.

The earphones were tested on another mobile phone and worked fine.
So far I have checked the permissions for the above mentioned apps, cleared cache for them, restarted the phone and enabled audio routing on developer settings - nothing helps.

A few weeks back I was able to hear calls from the earphones.

I would be grateful for any ideas.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Can you test another pair of wired earphones on your phone? If the same thing happens, then the problem is likely with your headphone jack. Blow it out with a can of compressed air and see if it persists.
