sound out of no where muting itself

I don't know what's causing it but for the passed 2 days my sound on my phone, pretty much when I have it set to ring, its as if all sounds are muted and only the vibrate works. I don't know what's causung it but its happened 2 days in a row.

The only way to fix this issue is by restarting the phone but its also annoying because I have a lot of apps in my sd card and default icons stay until you change the scene.

im not talking about when your receiving a phone call and you have to turn it around to silence it. I'm talking about that out of no where the phone silences itself and no matter what settings you switch, it won't come back unless you reboot. Its happened twice to me already

Had the same issue with my nexus 5. Here is what fixed it. go to settings-> apps -> running. look at the running applications , and kill one app at a time, and then immediately press the up/down volume button to see if you hear the beep. if you dont hear the beep kill the next process and repeat the process until you hear a beep. the last app that you killed just before you hear the beep, is the culprit. in my case, its textplus app, i had no volume mute issues after I uninstalled it.
