South African Jelly Beans....?

Hey maybe you would have noticed that I'm from South Africa... and I have a question or two, and I'm fully willing to accept the fact that no one will know and not be able to actually give a useful answer because of where I am.

So the question: When will I get JB? The thing is, last week (Saturday 7 July) I woke up to the OTA for 4.0.4. Yes I know... a bit tardy.
It's obviously an unlocked phone, I bought it from a Samsung shop here.
Also, trying to contact Google about anything is practically impossible.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to trust myself to do the update myself, even though I'm really tempted (like if I find instructions with pictures and things I might do it).

Help?

Is it a yakju or yakjuxx?

To find out here's a couple options:
1) Get this from the Google Play Store--> https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...s?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate&token=w1Njtr6k
2) Open up Google Maps then navigate to Settings--> About and if it's a yakju it should say "Samsung yakju" in the "Device" section

If it's yakju (which I assume it is since you got the 4.0.4 OTA update but since you got it so late it might not be), have you tried:
FC'ing Google Services Framework (navigate to Settings--> Apps--> All), clearing its data then checking System Updates? Might take easily 10+ attempts.

If it's yakjuxx, I'm not sure if the OTA has started for it yet.

Thanks for the help, the first link didn't help, but in maps I found out that it's the yakjuxw (yes with the "w", what does that mean?)

Does that change anything?
I'm about to consult my favourite search engine (which is obviously Google btw).

[Edit]
Ok, I just found out that yakjuxw is apparently managed by Samsung instead of Google directly, which is a bit of a drag I think.
Also, it says in the same forum that I found that I can convert my device to just straight yakju... should I? Is it a root thing or dangerous or anything?

I would go ahead and convert your device over so that you get updates directly from Google vs. Samsung.
Follow the directions in the thread that you found - It won't hurt your device and rooting is not invovled.

Good Luck

That's what I did last year - converted mine to yakju with no problems whatsoever.
I used Wugz GNex Toolkit, awesome straight forward UI.

Thanks again, does someone maybe have a link for a reliable way to get the stuff to convert it? Would there be a way to change it back in case I lose the stuff that makes it work in South Africa?

Google "Wugz GNex Toolkit". I might not have the correct spelling but a Google search should fix that.

As for what makes it work in South Africa...if it's an HSPA+ model it should work on all HSPA+ networks - to my knowledge South Africa doesn't have anything special that would stop it from working.

You sir, have helped a lot, thanks a bunch.

I'll post an update whether or not it all fails or succeeds. :D

[Update]

It's not working, I'm probably not doing it right, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

It worked! Eventually... after some figuring things out. It seems it needs to be unlocked first... which I was too ignorant to know. Man, I spent the whole Saturday doing this.

Is there any way that I can use that Root toolkit to flash JB? Because I don't feel like waiting any more. Flashing it right will just be like if I did it OTA? Will I get OTAs in future?

You'll get this OTA and all future OTAs as soon as possible from Google. If you just wait a few days you'll get it.

Glad putting yakju on worked.

As for Jelly Bean, try this procedure:
1) Navigate to Settings--> Apps--> All
2) Locate "Google Framework Services"--> Force Close--> Back to the Apps list & enter "Google Framework Services" again--> Clear Data & OK
3) Quickly navigate to Settings--> About--> System Update (it'll say "Last checked __ __ 1969" but that's fine)--> Check for update

With any luck it will prompt you for the 4.1 Jelly Bean update pretty quick.
If not, repeat that procedure because it definitely does work but it might take easily 10+ attempts.

WOOOP

IT WORKED!

Thankyouthankyouthankyou.

It's only working over wifi... which isn't a huge problem... but that's a funny story that probably doesn't matter... but anyway...

Thanks :)

Ya the rollout I believe is for Wi-Fi-only, at least for now.

Glad it worked. Happy to help.

Welcome to Jelly Bean, you had quite a productive weekend going from 4.0.2-4.1.1!

Now you can come to this thread about Jelly Bean--> http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=188744

Jelly bean ota - who got it?

...then you'll only get stock Android instead of your Touch Wizzed up skin. Unless you just want stock Android...

Is that sarcasm?

Anyhow, yes you would need to root it, no question.
