split text message issues

I noticed the other day that every sms I send out that gets split comes out on the recipients phone as complete nonsense. I was using Go sms, then switched to handcent, the just unrooted and went back to stock. The issue persists, is there some setting that is elluding me? is any body else having this issue?

I really don't even feel like answering this because it always turns into a hornets nest, but it's a CDMA network thing, or at the very least a Sprint thing (because some people will come in here and swear it doesn't happen on Verizon).

Either way, I don't know for sure but GoSMS and/or Handcent are supposed to fix this by having a setting somewhere in there that automatically splits them. Like I said, I don't know for sure because I've never used either app.

Whats the point of splitting messages? I use Go SMS and see that option to split messages but I dont use it. Maybe turn it off?

The point is like I said above, the CDMA network won't properly send anything over 160 characters, so the apps will automatically split and send them as two three four however many messages to avoid the jumbled mess.

Ive noticed this happens with me as well when I used the black modded MMS apk that's in the root/hacks/mod forum. My friend says my messages are always received as symbols, I told her "sorry for the native tounge, my mom is half android" :D

Thanks for the response, I can see what you are saying about the cdma thing. I tried the fix in Go SMS however it didn't fix it. After that the recipient only received the second part of the message. The strange part is that this didn't happen with my Evo. Now it is happening with my wife's optimus as well. I'm guessing that the only real fix is to just use the standard messaging app Wichita won't let you go over disappointing.

That's a good point, my mom's htc touch pro 2 has split texting and it works fine. Maybe HTC is the only brand on Sprint that can do this =o

I am and have been using goSMS Pro on my Nesus S 4G on Sprint since the phone was released back in May and I have not had any of these issues with splitting messages.

I use goSMS Pro as well with the split option enabled (NS4G on Sprint). I have not had any complaints with multipart messages... or maybe nobody pays attention to my texts :p

Anyway, my understanding is that the stock Google messaging app cannot handle messages over 160 characters. The HTCs that have been mentioned in this thread probably use their own messaging app which handles long messages better (pure guess since I have not used anything other than my Nexus).

I have been using gosms as well. I had no issues with my epic but since getting my nexus, I've been having the same issue. My daughter has my old epic and it continues to work fine when handling long messages that are divided into multiple messages. My nexus running the same app with the same settings continues to have the same issues of unreadable text.

My Nexus sends messages in tongues, so

I use Handcent, works perfectly, must go into settings to activate or it will do the same.

And everytime you flash a rom, but change the settings again. Problem solved
(and you can make the type SO much larger so I don't have to wear glasses)

I went back to Go SMS pro, and changed the settings to split the messages. What I found is that this does work, but not if you are using an airave mini tower from sprint. It is a cdma problem with sprint and even though you change the setting to split the message the airave will only send through the last portion of it. I don't know why though, if anybody can explain, I would love to hear it. And also, this never happened when using my EVO. Any ideas on that?

It doesn't matter if it's sent from work without the airave or at my house through the airave I get the same garbled junk.

Like I said earlier, my daughters epic, using the same network, same app and same settings doesn't do this either at home with airave or away on the network. Only does it on my nexus. This is either a nexus issue or an issue with the ROM or kernel.

Are any of you running pool party ROM or the trinity kernel?

Not using either of those, but I am using the NS4g with go sms, I had to go into settings to send settings and check the split messages box then it worked fine. I have flashed a couple of different roms, and as long as I reset the setting it worked fine. Also as long as I'm not in range of my airave mini tower. Nothing works for this around that thing.

Maybe those people have Blackberrys, because CDMA Blackberrys can send text messages with multiple pages. There was an update over the summer that allowed my old Sprint Bold to do this too. I think that's because the texts go through the Blackberry servers, like email, instead of over the normal network. I used to be able to text and talk with Sprint too on my old Blackberry. So maybe that is where some of the confusion about whether or not it is a network limitation comes from.

I can verify that in Handcent, sering the option to automatically split messages fixed the garbled messages for me.

First, one must understand that Sprint and Verizon are two completely different hardware system. I'm with Telus (which uses the same technology as Verizon). I have a SG S4 running 4.4.2. I was having an issue with my messages being split. I compared it to another person I was sending/receiving and they would send large sms to me and I would receive it as one text. When I sent a large (greater than 160 characters) text, my phone would show it as 2 separate messages but they would receive it as one! I should also mention that we are both on Telus, business account, and SG S4's! After calling Telus Mobility Technical Support, they did a reset on my messaging and I did a reboot. Problem solved!!!

I have got somewhat the same kind of issue. I am using a samsung galaxy S5 (sprint) and the problem I'm facing is that whenever I send a message which comprises more than 160 words, the person receiving it on the other end gets it in different parts numbered as 1/2, 2/2 etc although it is not split when I send it from here neither do I receive long messages in split form. Can someone kindly tell me how can I solve this issue cuz I've got a hell lot of people complaining that they receive my messages in several parts(in the correct order though) but if I could just get it to appear as a single message on the receiver's phone same way it is sent from my phone please do help me out here. Thank you.
