Sprint disabled tethering?

Seems like I can't tether any more with my Evo...any time I try to wired tether, it cuts my internet off (on my phone, and subsequently on my computer) and when I try to turn on the Hotspot, the same thing happens.

Why has there been no mention of this that I can tell?

Also, what are my options now if I want to at least wired tether my phone to a laptop? PDANet?

The built in hotspot functionality was free for the first month. Now you have to pay, or root and get android wifi tether.

However, USB tethering to a laptop is included in the base evo plan. Probably your best bet too, cause android wifi tether will drain your battery and drain it fast.

Yeah, I knew the Hotspot was a pay-service, and at first, my wired USB tethering worked just fine. Now for some reason it turns off the internet w/ USB tethering as well.

The moment I unhook the USB cable? Internet is back on my phone.

I just downloaded "EasyTether" ...though now you've got me thinking about rooting. Hmmm....

I have always used Easy Tether, does the phone USB tether natively with the included software?

You know what pisses me off, how many people are really going to have 8 of their friends connecting to one phone? Do you know how slow that would be?

Most of us use it occasionally when we need a larger screen, to check an email on a protected server, etc. 1 laptop, 1 connection. I am betting that 80 percent use tether in just this way.

I refuse to pay for an occasional use of a stupid technology, that nobody will use (or pay for) just because you can, doesn't mean it makes sense.

I think we can estimate how slow/fast it would be. Sprint advertises 4G at 3-6 Mbps, comparing it to 3G of 0.6-1.7 Mbps, or 10 times faster if you take the 2 extremes. I know, it's all promotion. But I think it's reasonable to assume that average speeds of 4G and 3G are somewhere in the middle, or 4.5 Mbps and 1.15 Mbps, respectively. Now, average 4G is almost 4 times faster than average 3G.

8 friends connected to the same HotSpot do not download data simultaneously most of the times, they take turns (you download data, then consume it - read, listen, watch, etc.), so the load on Internet connection would be maybe 4 times higher than with 1 user. So, here you go. 8 people on average 4G speed would feel the Internet speed to be as fast as 1 person on average 3G.

Speaking of technology. Current Sprint's 4G theoretical limit is 10 Mbps. And EVO is capable of receiving it and splitting it 8-ways right out of the box. If you don't use it now doesn't mean you will never want/need to use it in the future.

DO NOT PAY FOR APPS.

Root your phone and install ANY rom with 2.2 on it like cyanogen and it is BUILT IN and working. Screw those stupid pda/ez apps. They are BS and hard to work with.

Ok, I didn't realize the free version of EasyTether does everything I want (apparently the paid version is if you want to connect your XBOX or PS3 or something).

I am up and running on wired tethering (I have no need for wireless), which is what I wanted. Our company has some USB modems through verizon, but they are in high-demand, so this solves my problem and I can now just use my phone and not have to worry about signing out a company modem (if one is available).

I am assuming if the phone rings, it's going to drop my connection, but that's ok.

From what I've been told the free version of EasyTether does not support https, you must get the paid version to visit those sites.

I was told by several Sprint Reps that USB tethering was only available if you have the extra $30/month feature which I initially had. After I cancelled that feature, I got the "Data Call Failure" when I tried to USB tether again and it didn't work anymore.

So, instead, I used Unrevoked to do a simple root, and now use Wireless Tether for free. :)

In still on the fence about the hot spot feature. If I has a strong 4G signal in my home, I would have gotten it already. I may still buckle down and get it.

3G tethering is NOT included. 4G Tethering is, I use almost every other day at school.

Using the 4G tethering, you can Bridge an ICS connection and share it with a wireless router for everyone to use without paying the $30 and without rooting a custom rom. Can even use it for PS3 or Xbox.

Free 4G tethering is a loophole that Sprint plans to close...they've already closed it on many phones, in many areas. If you still have it count yourself lucky...and don't assume you'll have it forever.

As far as I know its included in the $10 fee. I will gladly tell them to shove it up their *** if they cut mine off.

I only use about 300MB a month tethered to a computer, now if your *** is sitting there torrenting or using massive bandwidth like 5GB/month through the tether than I would say your abusing it and deserve to be cut off.

If it helps at all, we have a couple mifis from Verizon, and we use them in the company van (among other things) and it's not that bad (certainly not great), but it only allows 4 users. Now we are just using them for "business" such as email and other functions, and I can VPN and RDP to servers and stuff. We tried it with Youtube and had some trouble if all of us were trying to stream a video.

I don't think the purpose is so 8 people can stream a Netflix movie at the same time or other 'heavy' usage, but it works for what (I believe) it's designed to do, which is allow people a somewhat functioning mobile wireless hotspot for "normal" tasks.
When Sprint first showed the Evo, they showed the hotspot feature being used to stream a netflix movie (in HD) via a Roku connected to an HDTV, and they also showed that the presentation was being filmed and uploaded online with an Evo using the hotspot feature.

Maybe you meant the Verizon MiFi was only meant for email and such, but Sprint clearly showed the Evo's hotspot feature is meant for things the average consumer would want to do.

Remove the old tether app off of your EVO by deleting it from the apps list and go download the apk 2.0.5-pre4 found here Downloads - android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code you will need to email yourself the link to your EVO then click the current link, no need to re-root, I just did this today and im tethering as I type this.
