Sprint Epic 4G Touch...with no service at all?

A friend is moving to another phone soon and is willing to sell me his Touch for a good price. His service will not be coming with it. I certainly don't want a voice plan of my own and find the data plans a little too ridiculous right now to consider.

So my question is: Can this phone be used smoothly with wifi absent any plans/activation, or is there some catch preventing that?

I saw in another thread that rooting might be needed for wifi, and that's fine, as long as it actually works in this situation.

Thanks

Yes. You can use it as a iTouch for lack of a better term.

It'll be the same as keeping it in Airplane mode. As long as you are near wifi, you'll have access to all of the things the rest of us do...just not voice and text obviously.

Though if you wanted to use voice and text over wifi, there are plenty of ways to do that to. Check out Google voice and Skype for starters.

Edit: You don't need to root to use Wifi, or to use it Wifi only.

If you ever want to use the phone on a network, make sure it has a clean ESN though.

Yep!

That's how I use my phone when I'm in other countries and don't want to be killed with roaming charges. I also use my older phones (Evo and Palm Pre) when I want a blast from the past.

Have fun, and let me know if you need any help with it.
