Well you're completely wrong seeing how you can have Hangouts on the tablet and hence why LG/Verizon issued a new software version which patches the Stagefright vulnerability. Don't blow hot air please.

You have to have a phone number to receive SMS and MMS messages. Hangouts is an Instant Messaging client and Google Updates it...not Verizon.
