Stop automatic downloads

Is there a way to stop your apps from automatically downloading when you first set up the phone?
I am having an issue where my phone is showing that it is constantly awake in the battery use graph. But the screen is off. It happened 2 days in a row.

So i want to do a reset and only load the bare minimum on it. How can i do this?

when i turn airplane mode on it is no longer awake so something must be polling constantly
