Storage and Ports Discussion(Nexus Player)

The Nexus Player comes with 8gb of internal storage and one micro-usb port.

I have said ever sense IO that I would buy the first Android TV device available because I am really wanting a full media box with chromecast functionality, but with these storage and port options, I think I am going to wait for a 3rd part box to come out.

A couple of sizeable games with fill up that 8gb of storage in a heartbeat. There is not even SD card support to help alleviate that limit. You can stream from Plex(ect), but that requires more outside hardware and adds nothing the chromecast cannot already do. You can add a storage drive, but that takes up your only usb port, so you will not be able to use USB gaming controllers, IR sensors, or literally anything else. A USB spliter may work?

I would also prefer the option of a Ethernet port, but that's another discussion.

If it had a second usb port and an SD slot, I would order one today. But as limited as it is, I am going to have to wait for other boxes to come with some more options. A product this limited on platform in its infancy is just too much for me to swallow.

What's everyone else think about these storage/port choices and how do you plan to live with them if you buy one?

I'm picking one up to see if it will be a good replacement for my aging GoogleTV. Chromecast wasn't the full answer for me as my daughter uses Plex, YouTube and others on the GoogleTV religiously (she does not have a device that she can cast from to the Chromecast). I do wish it had HDMI passthrough like the old GoogleTV as that saves a click of the (well programmed and kid/wife friendly) remote control. After testing it out with the family that may be what makes or breaks the deal.

``You can add a storage drive, but that takes up your only usb port,``

What do you mean by this? can you expand on the nexus player ? I also have a concern on the power and space this has. I would like to play big games like FIFA 15, Ashpalt, Real racing, HD shooter games via the play store but not sure if this new Nexus Player can handle it power and storage wise.

Also I assume XMBC and Plex work on this as well but the lack of storage options pushes me away but I would like to see reviews on performance and options.

It only has one micro USB port(it uses a nonusb port for power). You may be able to expand on to the one port, but I have never seen that done with Android before.

I'm not bothered by the storage and port options. I won't be using it for games, and all media will either be streamed from the Internet or a server in my house. 8 GB should be plenty for the apps that I'll have installed. I do wish that it had an Ethernet port, however.

I would have really liked for Google to make it with sd card capability. However in keeping with the Nexus family it does not.

I have pre-ordered the player and plan on using an old USB hub for adding additional devices.

I had another android stick and it worked with the USB hub and USB to ethernet adapter. I do have WiFi AC so am hoping I don't need the ethernet adapter. I did a test with my Nexus 4 phone which is WiFi N and get 50mbps so with AC I expect to get more (100-200mbps). When I had my USB ethernet adapter connected through powerline adapters I was getting like 15mbps and could stream 720P, but 1080P was choppy. Hoping WiFi AC works out, but agree ethernet would have been nice. Considering the cost, its reasonable for what you get, I am looking to upgrade a couple of years down the road anyways, when it will cost the same with more ports.
