Strange battery failure on Nexus 5X, please help

So I've owned a Nexus 5X for about a month and I've honestly tried to take care of it to the full extent of my ability (which might sound really dumb with this next part). Not a single scratch has yet been placed on the phone, yet ironically enough, it accidentally fell into my dog's water bowl when I was filling it up two days ago. It didn't stay in there for more than a second. I immediately powered it off and waited the next day (it was nearly midnight at the time) to hope it dried fully, so it wouldn't short the next time I tried turning it on.

I did some research and found that phones that fall into water eventually die anyway because of unattended corrosion, so I decided to open it up prior to turning it back on and see if I could remove any residue. Alas, there were a few drops here and there on top of the battery, so I dried it and started cleaning most of the internals with isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel. Later that day, I turned it back on and it seemed to function properly until I realized that the battery life was stuck at 50%, regardless of if I were charging it or not.

So I freaked out, Googled it and found that it was (obviously) a battery issue. I opened it up again to try and diagnose the issue, cleaning the battery pins and connectors with more alcohol, and when I tried turning it back on again, low and behold, it gave me an accurate representation of my battery life (8%).

With that said, it came at a price, since I am now completely unable to charge it again. Despite seeing the "charging battery" icon in the notifications screen when I plug it into a power source, on the battery screen itself it says "Not charging" while locked at 8%, which is baffling. That night I felt defeated and didn't know what else to consider, so I just left it charging overnight while powered off, hoping it was just a glitch, to no avail, since the next day it was down to 5% upon starting up. I don't know what to do at this point, and I really hope it isn't a USB port issue, because if it is I'm aware that my phone is completely screwed since it's soldered to the motherboard.

Today I tried soaking the motherboard in isopropyl alcohol for about two minutes in a small bag, swishing it around vigorously yet carefully, making sure I could try and clean any residue that might still be inside the port. I haven't reassembled the phone yet, as I need to make sure that it's completely dried.

Sadly I can't just get a new phone via the warranty, since it's void if submerged in water (plus, I may have lost the SIM tray lol), and I'm pretty strapped for cash at the moment as well, so I can't just buy a new one, and batteries for this particular phone are nearly non-existent, especially where I live.

I know that in a sense this isn't a particularly "strange" battery failure, since it's common knowledge that phones tend to die if submerged in water, but it's still bizarre nevertheless for it to be locked on 50% and then unable to be charged at all. Any tips or recommendations to fix this thing would be extremely appreciated.

Welcome to Android Central! It's possible that the microUSB port got damaged from the water -- you could look into replacing the port to see if that does the trick.

No, the port itself can usually be replaced. It's still hard to know for sure if that's all you'd need to do, but if you took it to a repair shop, they might try that first. It'd cost less than a motherboard replacement, at least.

The port is soldered into the motherboard, though. How can you replace the port alone without replacing the entire motherboard? :(

Sorry, I'm not that technical.;) I know that many other phones can have their USB ports replaced relatively easily, but I don't know if this phone is particularly challenging or not.

It is possible to get someone or buy the tools to Microsolder the new USB port on. Obviously it's very intensive but it is possible. I'm certain someone has tried or there are basic guides for mobile device es with similar port on board setups.

This phone has USB C and the port is soldered to the phone so it is basically not replaceable. However it doesn't sound like the port is the problem. Since you are still getting power through the port it's most likely that there was a short in the charging circuitry causing damage. Either that or you shorted the battery down to a voltage level that cannot be recovered (less likely but still possible).

Your options are replacing the battery (low percentage chance this will fix everything) or replacing the motherboard. Maybe find one with a smashed screen in classifieds to salvage a board.

Best of luck.
