Strange Icon and locking homescreen

My wife's phone, S5 (Verizon) began locking up yesterday. Upon checking the phone, there is a small, semi-transparent icon that looks like a remote control on the upper right side of whatever screen the phone is on. If the icon is pressed, as transparent window appears over top of the home screen and will not allow any thing to be done on the screen. They only way we have found to remove this 'barrier' is to restart the phone.
I have checked through the program list and can find nothing that seems to be related to this icon. All the settings appear to be the same as they were prior to this icon appearing.
