With a 16GB N7 and a 32GB GSIII with a 32GB mSD card installed, it should go without saying which one usually has the media stored locally on it.

As such, is there an easy way to stream video *from* the GSIII for playback on the N7? Basically to make the phone be a DLNA server?

The Galaxy S3 has integrated DLNA support. On the S3; go to System Settings->More Settings->Nearby Devices and set up your sharing options. Then you can push content from the S3 to the N7 or any other DLNA client (PS3, etc). You'll need a client for the N7. I use BubbleUPnP for music, but there are free options on Google Play as well (just search for dlna player to get a list of results). Edit: MX Player (free) seems to work fine for video.

"file expert" has the dlna client in it. I think it has the server too but not sure.

you dont need server in N7 since you are streaming to it.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I thought the phone had the ability built in, but never tried it. Right now I am playing 720p content from my phone on my tablet via Wifi direct (so I wouldn't need to jump into a dodgy hotel wlan) while posting this with my phone!

This is sweet, now on business trips I can just load up the phone with videos and if the hotel has a tv with HDMI, playback with the mhl adaptor, if not just serve it to the tablet.
