There are days, where away from home, I'll appear to be getting a solid 4 or 5 bar signal on my device. But in actuality often tines the signal is actually poor. I then go to settings-->about-->networks, looking at my network signal in that menu, I often see network strength of -110 dBm away from home, and my signal is junk, calls frequently break up, and data speeds are sluggish. But if I am home, I typically see around -68 dBm on network signal. And get much better connectivity on calls, and much better data speeds. Is -68 dBm indicative of a better signal strength than -110 dBm? I use a network extender here at home that really helps signal strength a lot. I have been out in public places with supposed full 5 bar signal of LTE, and yet my phone would often not connect to the internet, it be even slower than what is expected of even 3G, and calls would cut in and out, or flat out drop.

So is a lower dBm actually better than say a dBm over 100. What is the absolute strongest you can get in terms of dBm?

Yes. -70 dBm is better than -100.

The other thing to consider is load on the tower. You might have a good signal but if the tower use heavily loaded then you will see slow speeds and potentially dropped calls.

Verizon signal has gone to sh$t in my area. Especially in rural areas. Since they've brought on the higher bands.

Signal strength isn't that important to me.... Even at -119dbm, i can still get good speeds

I can NOT argue with this statement.

When I left Sprint for Verizon their data speed was much faster at my home. I was seeing 35-40megs dl and less than 1 with sprint.

Now that I have them I think I see 8-10 mbps on the regular. It is very disappointing. I live in the hill country in central texas but before I signed in they were very fast, now just ok.

Verizon's 3G signal was a thick blanket almost everywhere I traveled in the state. The LTE signal is much weaker, and full of holes in my area. All my co workers on Verizon are complaining about how poor the signal has gotten. At least around here. I complained about signal to Verizon and they admitted that due to 'network changes" the signal has worsened over time. And no, they aren't going to fix the problems. "Here pay $200 for a network extender." Was their response.

Matty, I live in an area with very bad 4G signal. Awhile ago I downloaded an app Signal Check Lite. It would show me the strength of the 4G connection. It showed my connection to be about -120 to -125, with one bar showing. I took screen shots and saved them. I made a few different calls to VZW and a few discussions asking why should my phone switch to 3G all the time when I pay for 4G. I also made several points about other carriers having good signals in my area. They agreed and made a really good offer on a 4G connector. Issue solved.

My point is don't give up and make several calls. If the first person doesn't help hang up and try again. I think I made about 5 calls over a weeks time frame.

Thanks for the advice!
