Superuser. Advice for idiots. SG2

Hi everyone I'm new to the smartphone scene. I'm very happy with my SG2 as is, however I'm very interested in the benefits of rooting. I have researched a little and there are benefits. Extended battery life and a faster CPU (without overclocking) is attractive. Also I believe apps that were installed at manufacture can be uninstalled. However, I have a few questions, 1) will my phone lose any data/apps after rooting? 2) I'm a novice and I'm a little worried I'll stuff it up and end up bricking my phone. (I know my warranty is void after rooting) and can I download, install and run any android app on the market or only apps for superusers?
