I have a total infatuation with my evo. I upgraded from the pre. Honestly, I was not expecting to like any touch screen only phone, and now could not imagine going back. This phone has exceeded all my expectations. I use it with an acer timeline laptop, and picked up a playbook on release day. Between the three, I have been more productive than ever.
Now to the point. I have cheap dsl at home, and at work. I have pretty much put the laptop away for most web surfing, instead using the evo or playbook. I leave the evo's wifi on all the time, and it connects faster than any wifi device I have ever used. In preparation for an upcoming vacation to Colorado, I decided to turn on hotspot for the month so that I can use it for the trip. I turned it on one week early to try it out around town first. I live in the country about 20 miles north of Abilene. 3G is spotty at best, so I did not have real high hopes.
Boy was I wrong.
So far, everywhere I have tried to connect with 3G, surfing on my playbook and laptop is faster than the cheap dsl at work and home. NOTICEABLY faster. And when I took it down into Abilene, and turned on 4g...
I actually can't believe how fast it is.
All this has actually made me kind of mad. I don't have a need for hotspot, but it sure has been nice the last few days. I have used it much more than I thought I would. It makes me a little mad that Sprint has changed policy so that you can only turn it on for one month at a time. It also makes me mad that the other carriers are so outrageous with data, so I can't get as mad at Sprint, and that makes me more mad.
I don't need hotspot, but now I really want it. I don't want to root for several reasons, not the least of which is free hotspot is breach of contract. It makes me mad that Sprint's policies are making me consider it. For this month anyway, I will be trying to convince myself that I don't need it.
Meanwhile, I will continue to be impressed how fast surfing through 3G can be.
