Switching Roms

When switching Roms do you have to delete the old Rom from the sd card?

Technically you don't have to "delete" the ROM from your sdcard. You can have a folder on your sdcard named "ROMS" or whatever and put 1, 2, 5 ROMs sitting in there to have on hand to flash at will. I usually have a few ROMs and different themes and kernels sitting on my sdcard to flash whenever I feel the need for a change.

But as Blackhawk stated, when switching from one ROM to another ROM you do have to boot into CWM and wipe data/cache partition/dalvik cache before flashing a new ROM.

Whoops. Thanks for the correction. Didn't notice he said sdcard. Thought he meant from the phone.

Thought I'd share a screen shot. This is how I have my clockwork backups set up.

The one with the date is my nightly backup. Always make one before I flash the new nightly for cm7 then delete the one from the night before. And have one incase something happens and I messed up.

For instance since I'm not on cm7 right now the dated one will now be the cm7_126. Delete the last cm7 permanent one. Make nightlies when i go back to cm7

Stock_rooted is the first backup I ever made on this phone. Will always be there and on my computer. Will never update it.

2.3.7 is what I'm running now. But its stock untouched. But I'm running it now with netarchy. So if I go back to cm7 ill save this as 2.3.7_netarchy. Update if needed. If anything happens I can always flash back to 2.3.7 stock. The og one is for fail safe of fail safes. Lol.

Smart thinking Blackhawk. You get an A+ for being organized. That is a big key factor in ROM development and theme building. If you don't have good organization you will loose yourself and your progress in all your files real quick.

Question for Blackhawk/others who switch roms often:

After each rom install, do you have to manually install the apps, setup home screen widgets, setup emails, setup browser favorites, etc. or do you use some app like titanium to backup your apps and settings that allows a one-button restore ?

Me I do the following...

Wipe data/cache/dalvik and flash the new ROM along with GAPPS & Kernel one after another then boot up.

Then I use MyBackup Root/Pro (I use the paid Pro version) to restore my applications and settings that are saved before I swap out ROMs.

I like using either LP or ADW launcher so that has its own backup/restore option which covers your home screens and dock setup.

Then I use Dolphin Mini for my browser which also has backup/restore for all your bookmarks, history, settings, etc..

That about covers the basics for most setups.. Normally I can swap out ROMs and be up and moving in 10-15 minutes starting from the time I flash.

The last few things like running through the basic phone settings a couple minutes to do the normal ringer/notification setup, etc.. I have never really found a app even with MyBackup Root or Titanium that properly or successfully handles the settings and since each ROM is setup a bit differently between Oxygen/CM/Pete's, etc.. its best not to use a backup of settings between ROMs to avoid conflicts...

I personally haven't done titanium backup. I Don't switch to "new" roms often. I have my stock and CM7 set up the way I like them already and haven't tried anything new. I got rid of my MIUI backups cause I knew I was going to use them. If I do I might try titanium this time around.

For Cm7 though I have Google backup my data in the cloud. I know some people don't like this but it'll download your apps for you. Just log in with your Gmail. But it's a pain when your not on wifi. And then my WiFi and everything restores. So I don't have to do much. Let it do what it does. Then I reset up the home screens.

That's just the way I did it; but, if your going to be trying "new" roms everyday you might want to give it a try. I'm definitely going to give it a try if I try a "new" rom soon. Otherwise I'm really only switching between my backups and updating Cm7 at the moment. So doing it the way I did it wasn't really annoying for me.
