syncing contacts to gmail

i have tried searching, i just can't seem to find an answer to how i would go about syncing my contacts to gmail after they are synced to facebook. can i have them synced to both so i have the facebook pics and status and have them in gmail as contacts? i got this phone in june and still can't figure it out. so clearly i am dumb!!!! if someone would be so kind as to lending me a hand, i would appreciate it!!!!
