System Memory at 9+ gb!?

trying to free up space on my galaxy s7. why is the system memory so high. can not access that section either. how can I bring this number down?

You can't... that's the space used by the phone's operating system and any system updates you've received.

Apps and operating systems tend to get larger over time, so we have to get larger phones over time. A 32GB phone is still usable, but not if you're going to keep hundreds of songs, pictures and videos on it. Use an SD card for all that stuff and keep it off the phone.

Welcome to Android Central! That's not that unusual for Samsung phones. It's the OS (which takes up about 4-5 GB) and all of the Samsung and carrier bloatware (whihc takes up the other 4-5 GB).
