I have added nothing since I bought this thing except my usual apps and started around 20gb or so used. I feel that 40+gb of space used is nuts after one update. Anybody else seeing this? Have found no way to clear it and no have not done a factory reset.

Install Terminal Emulator for Android. Type

df

and the Enter key. (The display is easier to read if you go into landscape mode.) The last entry will tell you how much space you have to install apps, save pictures, etc. The rest of the 128GB (or 512GB) is used by the phone itself, for things like the kernel, Android, system apps, your IMEI and other storage, etc.

When you buy a phone that says "128GB storage", it doesn't mean that you can put 128GB of stuff on it. My 128GB phone (a Pixel 2) has 110GB of storage available to me to start with - that's 18GB used by the phone. (If the phone comes from anyone but Google, there's manufacturer bloat on it. If it comes from a carrier, there's additional carrier bloat on it.)

I agree and understand, however 1 security update and it jumps over 20 gb. This is what I dont understand. I just know what I started with, added nothing and BOOM!

Try clearing cache in recovery and see if it's ok.
