I have an Iphone 5 on AT&T and want to get the HTC One but I don't want to spend $550+ .

My wife has her line with Metro and I thought what if I get the HTC One on EIP ($99/$199) with T-mobile for her, then I give her my iphone 5 which is unlocked and I can use the HTC with AT&T , but of course I will need to unlock it, the question is are there ways to unlock the phone or is this one of those that can only be unlocked by the carrier?

This will mean I get the best phone in my opinion as it will support ATT LTE, the question is does it also support ATT 3g/hspa?

Of course I could just sell the iphone 5 on craiglist but thats is always always a hassle.

If I remember correctly, as far as TMob, you need to pay the phone in full in order to unlock it.

Ask your carrier, some if ours in UK will unlock it for you at anytime (sometimes for a small fee) but you still obviously have to complete the contracted payments.

Your wife has Metro then how will you get one with T-Mobile?
They are still 2 different companies. The feds have approved a merger but the Metro share holders have not voted on it. Thats in a few weeks.
Even then IF they are to merge it would still take a while.

We would move her line to t mobile ( even though they will be the same company soon , like you stated they are still separate today) and use the upgrade as a new customer to get the HTC One , I will then use it on ATT and I'll give her my iphone 5.

In theory sounds like a great plan if i can unlock the phone , she gets an iphone and I get my One for $99/199.. But I have a feeling the HTC One will be difficult to unlock.

If you're just talking SIM unlocking, there is no difficultly, T-Mobile can do it. It's just a matter of calling their customer service to persuade them to do it. I think the difficulty might actually be on the iPhone side; as far as I know they still don't sell iPhones and I'm not 100% clear on what the process is to get them to provide service to them. Either way, good luck; would be very interested in the results of this.

How will you get the phone for $100-200? With T-Mobile's new no-contract plans, you have to pay off the full price of the phone. So there's no difference between that and buying the phone unlocked.

I used to do tons of unlocking work with iPhones. T-Mobile uses sim cards so you can put their sim in an unlocked iPhone and they will never know that you are using it. Only problem with the iphone is they are usually made carrier specific antenna wise. I unlocked and ATT iphone for use on tmobile everything worked except i could not get any data coverage as the iphone didnt have the connectivity to get onto the tmobile data network. It was nice since i wasnt forced to pay for a data plan but you probably wont be able to get data unless you buy a T-Mobile version

They're also doing a "down payment" + payments thing, which would get really sticky were you to switch devices.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to imply (though I didn't do a good job of it lol). Either way, you would end up paying a lot more than $200.

You have to buy the phone for the full price, then have to have service with them for 40days before T Mobile will send you unlocking code. I just called T Mobile customer number and that's what they told me.

Save yourself the headache and do what the last two guys said. Trying to get T-Mobile to give you an unlock code takes forever.

I think you can unlock all phones as long as you know how to unlock it yourself or you have to pay for it :)

Or calling your carrier (some will help and unlock it for you.. Just depends).

I used to work for T-mobile, And there is a loop-hole available to get the unlock code..
What you do is: Call Customer Care and explain that you will be traveling internationally and want to use an international SIM in your current Phone (Despite T-mobile's "Unlimited International" plan all Simple Choice Plans receive for free). T-mobile will then look to see if you have made at-least 2 EIP payments on the device, see if the device has been active on your account for at-least 14days, and make sure you aren't past due. Go ahead and have your phone's IMEI # Ready (Can obtain by pressing *#06# on dial pad) and an e-mail address. Should receive e-mail within 3-7days usually. ;)
