T-Mobile wi-fi calling this weekend?? (Update: Official Announcement)

Re: T-Mobile wi-fi calling this weekend??

It's possible due to him mentioning the Nexus 6 of all things, but his tweet is very vague...

How is it gonna work? Is it an app? A firmware update? Will it matter which firmware version I am on? I have T-Mobile, but I am on LMY47D, not LMY47M.

My guess is it'll be a standalone update independent of Google OS updates, at least at first. Any Nexus 6 that has a T-Mobile SIM inserted will mist likely be prompted to update

If it is, I'm really stoked right now. Been waiting for this moment for a long time.

I'll see it to believe it. Too many broken promises from T-Mobile in regards to WiFi calling on the Nexus 6, which is looking like the step-child nexus device.

Still, no other Nexus device has the ability to do WiFi Calling. Can you really blame them for taking a while to develop it?

Very interesting...it does seem to fit the time line.

Wonder if you would have to have a tmobile sim in to get this update or goes to all Nexus 6 devices

Re: T-Mobile wi-fi calling this weekend??

Well... its a feature that only works if your carrier supports WFC AND they also support the method. You won't be able to load this on a Verizon Nexus 6 and miraculously get Wifi Calling.... it's basically SIP... your phone registers via SIP with servers on you carrier and announces itself as a VOIP device. Then your carrier knows to route any incoming phone calls over the network rather than over the air.

Keep in mind that this feature isn't just for T-Mobile customers. Its a feature that is also critical to Project Fi so I suspect that whatever modifications they made will be shared.

If they do release an update, it will most likely come as a factory image first, OTA second. A Nexus OTA that doesn't come piggy back on top of a full factory image is a rare thing (I don't recall ever seeing one to be honest).

Ya know, I dunno. I don't see why T-Mo's ability to get its own N6s up and running on its own wifi system (not Project Fi) would depend upon a full factory image from Google that would go out to all N6s everywhere.

I believe it will only go to T-Mobile networked Nexus 6 phones... Since T-Mobile WiFi calling would be pointless to go to other phones.

Unless .......... they are just going to push it to everyone in case they did go to T-Mobile. It will be interesting to see.

Re: T-Mobile wi-fi calling this weekend??

The stock Nexus 6 does have software specific to carriers, that is useless for folks using their phone on other carriers. Like Verizon backup or Sprint DM service etc. I would not be surprised if the T-Mo WiFi calling was not baked into the image for all carriers in a similar manner, and would be useful only when it has a T-Mo SIM in it.

If I am stock and unrooted, do I need to unlock my bootloader to manually update this?

I sideloaded it this afternoon and factory reset for good measure, so far so good.
