Hi,

on Samsung official website, it doesn't mention it play 4K video, but HDR video.

No online review on youtube mention 4K, but HDR.

does it mean HDR =/= 4K ?

Thanks!

HDR and 4K are two very different things. The Tab S3 WILL play 4K video, BUT it won't play it at 4K. What? Yeah, the screen on the S3 tablet is just not able to display 4K video; the screen resolution is 2048x1536 while a 4K video is standard at 3840x2160. It will play, but it won't display in 4K.

The Tab S3, however, IS capable of 4K video recording.

my main goal was to play 4K video and mirrorcast it to my 4K TV.

so it still won't play 4K, because the table resolution can't play 4k basically.

Not on its screen, no. But it WILL still play the 4K video. Think about it as playing a 4K video on an HD TV. The player will have to downgrade the image to 1080p but it WILL still play. Since the Tab S3 can record and play in 4K, if you are mirroring to your 4K TV, then the 4K TV will display in 4K, but the S3 screen will still display in 2.5K if you will.

If you are casting to your TV like in Chromecast, your tab device is just acting as a remote between the data and the TV. I use my Samsung Tab S2 to cast YouTube videos in 4k to my Sony 4k TV, and its its pure 4k quality on my TV.
