Tablet dead? Won't power on or seem to charge

I've had my Note 8.0 Tablet since new for quite a few years, and over the past 2-3+ years not used it as one day I left it for a few weeks and it didn't turn on again.

I tried charging it with different cables / plugs, and tried different button combinations, but nothing happens, it's completely dead. Usually the notification light comes on when charging, but this doesn't light up.

More recently, I've tried replacing the USB port as I'd read it can be faulty. The seemed to make no difference.

Today I replaced the battery, but still nothing. It just seems completely dead. Still no light comes on when the charger is plugged in.

I'll leave it for a while but It feels like something bigger is wrong with it.

Has anyone come across this before?

I'd like to sell the tablet, and it's unfortunate that it doesn't work, as it's in immaculate condition, it's been in a hard case since day 1 and the screen has never been touched.

Is there a way I can get the data off it if I sell it as not working?

It could be something wrong on the board. There may be a resistor or circuit path that is shot.

If your tablet has passwords or any other sensitive information on it, never sell it on for spares, somebody else may be able to repair it and get access to your data. Personally I wouldn't take the chance. It will be hard to do, but crushing it is the safest bet if you can't fix it yourself.

A defective mainboard which cannot charge doesn't mean it's completely dead. It still can run with a full battery.
If data is your main concern, try find another working tab 3 and plug your battery in to charge it. Most tab 3 8 inches and above have the same battery connector. I do it all the time on tablets with completely drained battery to see if the mainboard can be fixed or data can be saved with a full charged battery.
Some worse cases, it cannot turn on at all with a full battery.
Be sure to see the difference between not charging and no display, many users don't see the difference. No display you can hear some noise while pressing volume up or down or vibration when it turns on.
Not charging, I can see easily with an USB voltage current detector, charging current should be 1.5 Amps to 1.7 Amps. This tool is only around $3 to $9 on Ebay.

Thanks, I was thinking it might be something like this, which i suppose makes it a bit of a brick! I know electronics specialists might be able to fix it but probably more money than it's worth.

The last time I used it the tablet had a screen pattern lock, and quite a few apps / data on it, although i was starting to use it less and less before I left it for a few weeks, and it hasn't worked since (about 2-3 years ago).

I wouldn't feel comfortable selling it without having factory reset it, but I can't even get that far!

I did wonder if it would run off a charged battery, although I wondered if perhaps Samsung devices - a bit like some Apple ones - only turn on after the battery has some charge, even with the power plugged in.

Having watched and followed a video on how to replace the battery, the demo showed the tablet working immediately without plugging in the charger, which I assume is because the battery has some charge. I don't know if the replacement I have has charge, or if the issue is a dead board - but it won't seem to charge anyway.

I remember whenever I plugged in the charger, the LED would light up red to show it was charging - but this no longer happens.

The only other thing I could replace would be the power button, but given that it won't charge I assume this is not faulty and it's the board or something else.

Is the Tab 3 the same as the Note 8.0 as far as the battery is concerned? So you're saying put the replacement battery in a Tab 3 8 inch, charge it then put battery back in my Note 8.0?

I'd be surprised if the issue is the display as there are no sounds or vibrations when trying to power on / get it work.

I might try testing the charging voltage, but not sure how to do this with the tool?

Does the Tab 3 7.0inch have the same battery connector, or do I have to get an 8.0inch one?

If anyone can help I'd be greateful - I can find plenty of 7.0" tabs that might be usable to test in, but not alot of 8.0" ones
