Tablet only charges while OFF.

This seems to be a recent development, as I have had my Galaxy Tab S 10.5 for several months now, rarely ever shut it down, so I would have noticed before this if it wasn't charging.

The situation now is that if I plug the cable into the USB port while the tablet is ON, there is a red X over the battery icon, indicating not charging. If I shut the tablet down it charges just fine while it's off, same cable and everything else.

I have always had the USB cable connecting the tablet to the PC via a USB hub. That worked for months and, combined with the fact that it charges while shut down, I don't believe there is a problem with cable or hub.

Any suggestions?

The red X tells you that you aren't getting enough power to charge. The reason it will charge while off is that it doesn't need so much power because it isn't running. Something has changed in your charging source.

That sounds reasonable, but I don't think it applies in this case.

I have since tried to charge via a 240V wall plug and the same situation exists: the tablet must be OFF for charging to take place - if the tablet is on the red X is there.

I once tried to charge my tablet using my phone car charger. While it was on, I had the red X and no charging. When I powered it off, it would charge slowly. Even though you went to 220 outlet, did you look to see if something might have changed in your power block or transformer or whatever you want to call the little cube? Perhaps it isn't putting out its rated power. Can you get another one to try.

Try a different cable. I have had the cable that came with my Tab S go bad and get the red X you describe. If that doesn't do it make sure you have a 5.3V charger. A PC may not put out enough power to quickly charge the Tab S.

Well, in that case voltage could be the problem. The wall-plug I'm using is 5V 0.68A. No idea where the actual plug that came with the tablet is. I'll have to have a look around and see if I can find it. It's probably being used for something else.

The official charger that came with mine in the US is rated:

Output 5.3 V
2.0 Amps

OK, thanks guys. Found the correct adapter and problem solved. Probably should have woken up to this myself, but it had previously charged OK from the USB hub, and I didn't think to try switching to a wall socket until this problem occurred.

If you are unsure of the current of your charger and/or data cable, you can use Ampere to check the current. You get it from the play store. I am not allowed to post links yet.

I just got my tablet yesterday and this is the problem I am having. I've used the charger from the box and get the red x. I used my charger from my note 4 and still get the red x. I've tried both chargers in the wall, surge protector and still red x. But if I turn the tablet off, Oh look it charges.

I would try a restart but if that fails, I would return it for a new one:

Here are a variety of button combos that folks have mentioned. I'm sorry but I don't have a definitive knowledge of which ones (Vol Up or vol Down) really works!!!

Full Reset Reboot

Volume Down is the LEFTmost volume button
Volume UP is the RIGHTmost.

went for the factory reset (Volume up, Power button and Home button).

----------------------

Press and hold the Volume UP and Volume DOWN and Power button at the same time, 10 seconds. Tablet restart.

-------------------

After about eight hours the battery didn't die. Got frustrated... continued looking at multiple forums. Found that someone managed a reboot on a Tab2 with combination of volume and power hold for 10 seconds.

Well it worked... Volume down, then power button hold for 10+ seconds and the unit rebooted.
..................

even when I held the power button for 30 sec it didn't do anything, what did work was hold the power button , volume down and menu key for 10 seconds and it will reset

--------------------

Good luck

Acrually... It was my own stupidity. I didn't realize that my adapters were not plugged in all the way. The dogs must have hit with their tail or I'm just retarded and didn't push it in all the way. Needless to say... It charges ha.
