Tablets not staying on Wifi without Internet

I have 9 Insignia tablets running Android 5.

I run an app called "Mobile Sheets Pro" and I can set my tablet as the "MASTER" and the rest as the "SLAVES" by creating a group on Wifi and the other tablets joining the group.

I then can call up songs and it appears on their tablet.

I have an Apple Airport Express I take with me to gigs with simply is a closed network that does not have access to the internet.

All the tablets will continuously drop the Wifi connection when there's no internet.

The Master/Slave feature works perfect when I'm at home on my home network with internet. But once I join to my closed network with no internet access, the tablets will constantly drop connections.

I have already tried, via adb shell using
Code:
settings put global_captive_portal_server_detection_enabled 0
on each of the tablets but that didn't change anything.

I have also tried apps like "best wifi keeper"

Can anyone help with this? My options at the moment are

1. buying 9 new tablets capable of an updated Android OS
2. somehow creating internet access at all my gigs

ANY help is appreciated

Are you sure that Mobile Sheets Pro doesn't need an active internet connection?

Other than that, Android should be able to connect to a router that isn't connected to the internet, so that shouldn't be the problem. Maybe the Airport Express drops LAN connections if there's no WAN?

I am NOT positive but am fairly sure that Mobile Sheets Pro doesn't need an internet connection. In talking with the developer, he hasn't mentioned ANYTHING about MSP being the culprit.

Doing some research, I've found that Android will drop the Wifi on networks without internet (or less than quality) internet connection because its constantly trying to ping google.

It's connecting to the router, but within a few seconds or minutes, will drop the connection briefly.

Re: Airport Express .. I have not investigated that deeply into it but before I bought the Airport, I tried the same thing with another Wifi Router (non-Apple) and the same thing was happening. Which leads me to believe that it's and Android issue and not a router or Mobile Sheets issue.

If you have the tablets constantly scanning wifi, and set to use a better connection if the current one is weak, that could explain it (and why it's pinging Google).

In Android 5, there's no way to turn off the option to "scan for better connections". So, I'm stuck.

It would appear so (unless you could "backdate" to KitKat [I don't recall whether it could be told to stay on the current connection]).
