talk me into rooting

So I have had my epic 4g since launch and love it. Before this my only two smart phones were a heavily customized palm treo 755p and then a palm pre which was hacked to hell thanks to home brew So rooting seems very logical for me but I don't know much about it in either a howto or benifit kind of way. So explain to me the reason to do this and kind of the how. Because I feel like I'm missing the boat here

Here are some great reasons to root EVEN if you continue with the stock rom
1) adfree (ability to change your host file)
2) ability to use a cisco vpn
3) nandroid backups with clockworkmod (root actually not needed)
4) Mobile AP (free wireless tethering with infrastructure support)
Check out the developers forum on XDA- they have a very nice one-click root/clockworkmod installer
