I have noticed the same. The tapping only seems less when you recently tapped the phone.

I always disable tap to wake on my phones.

I use an app called Gravity that wakes and keeps my phone screen on when I use it.

Just tried it, my phone was on my desk and locked, a simple light double tap immediately woke up the screen. Exynos unlocked version here.

Try turning on the option to increase screen sensitivity for screens with screen protectors.

I have the Spigen Neo Flex HD Screen protector on by the way

Not using a screen protector but I changed the setting. Definitely improved it.

Tap to wake works fine on my S10e.
