Task Manager/Killer Discussion

Of any "task killer" or "task manager" I use is the built in one within Android. Not to be confused with the one that comes with TouchWiz. They're really very different.

Although I don't use the Touchwiz launcher on my Epic as I use Launcher Pro instead. With that being said - how do you get to the "task manager"?

If I press on the home key and "task manager" pops up, are you calling that the Android one or the Touchwiz one?

Thanks

My wife says she is not receiving a number of texts. I'm guessing it is Advanced Task Killer and have told her to uninstall it. Hopefully that works.

Totally confused at this point! Do I use the ATK or not? I just got my Samsung Continium (or what ever it is!) I am a REAL NEWBIE.....my old mind is very confused at this point!

Ok thanks, I just took it off of my phone. My nephew said it is a "must" . In fact to tell you just how much a newbie I am....this is the first phone that I have had that I am texting! I am WAY behind the times but want to take advantage of the tools THIS phone offers! All tips from experienced users are very helpful!

The Epic has its own Task Manager that you can use to close running apps. Hold down the home key and select the gray Task Manager button. I use the supplied Samsung Program Widget to quickly tell if I left any programs running. Always use the Back button to leave a program that you don't want to leave on. If you use the home button, you will leave the app running in the background. Some apps stay on however even if you back out...Voice Dialer, Voice Search, and Browser to name a few.

For what its worth, since uninstalling my task killer app based on advice from a number of forums, I have not noticed any difference in performance or battery life. They are completely unnecessary. They were useful for pre 2.x phones. But 2.x and up manage tasks automatically.

Also, 2.2 seems to be doing a better job at killing tasks than 2.1. Going into the manager I continually have less apps running on a normal basis than I had in 2.1.

Yep, Froyo had a lot of backend changes that sped things up and, amongst other things, improved Android's (already excellent) battery and memory management abilities.

Excellent is a bit of a stretch, though it's greatly dependent on the quality of the apps one is using.

It is funny that this improvement gets completely overlooked in most people's whinning about the lack of froyo. They seem to care more about flash and draining their battery even quicker.

As someone who is currently employed in a VERY busy sprint repair center, I can tell you that advanced task killer is a bad idea. I have seen this program kill off touchscreens and even charging ports (no doubt it was at least partly due to user error as well).

Software generally doesn't damage hardware. The task killing software in question shouldn't even affect the touchscreen or charging ports. I'm extremely skeptical of this claim.

"Kill off" doesn't mean physically damage. It means task killers not set up properly can stop required processes that MUST stay running in the background to keep the phone operating properly.

I could cause a hardware damage, if its running constantly, and i don't mean the screen or something, The battery is going to heat up, and hell who knows?
