Tasker (or similar app) on the NS4G?

Thinking about how annoying some of my regular 'switching' can be (volume, data, BT, etc.), I was wondering how many folks use automation apps like this on their NS4G and how worthwhile they are. Tasker seems pricey, and some of the reviews make it sound like it won't function properly on ICS. I had a similar app on webOS called Mode Switcher that was pretty useful, but even that took quite of bit of learnin' to make it work the way I wanted.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I have a bunch of NFC tags in various locations like the house, work, car that ive been using for a month or so. Its been a great time saver.
Picked up Tasker as well for some more complicated commands and it has a bit of a learning curve but I havent had any problems with it on ICS. I seem to recall a recent update addressing ICS issues though.

I'd like to know more about the NFC thing...how to get started, where to get them, how to use it. Is there a good source for beginners?

I got my tags from here mostly because of the Android logo but there are other suppliers as well.

I use this app to do the "programming" if you want to call it that of the tags.

For example, I have a tag stuck by my back door that I leave the house out of. When I tap it, it turns off my WiFi, enables GPS, turns the alerts to vibrate.
When I come home, I tap it again and it turns WiFi back on, audible alerts, GPS off, etc.

Possibilities are pretty endless, especially with Tasker, but for the price of Tasker I'd start playing with the basics first. The app I posted is extremely self explanatory.

I am doing the exact same thing as Chud. I have 5 or so tags set up. I got my tags at a different place but the price is compairable. I was using a different app but since I have been using the one Chud has been so kindly to post here. They are so worth it. Mine are on the front door, car, work and nightstand. I think I might be missing one?

Tagstand who makes the app we're talking about is the other place I was thinking of to get tags from. Ha.

grouchy, if you want I can throw a tag in an envelope and mail it to you to try if youre apprehensive about the up front cost of the tags. itd of course be up to you to acquire the necessary apps though.

Thanks for the offer...I went ahead and ordered 10. I kind of like the idea of using tags and it makes sense the way you folks are using them.

So does just holding your phone close activate the routines? I ask because I could see having maybe two at work - one for meetings and one for at my desk settings - proximity to two different tags may cause conflict. Obviously we're talking inches here...but it would be useful to know the best setup for that kind of thing.

It's been my experience that you have to actually touch the phone to the tag for it to activate so you should be more than fine with inches in-between.

I use Tasker all the time for many different functions. There's a learning curve as someone already mentioned, but I've probably paid for close to 30 apps through the years, and none of them have given me my money's worth like Tasker has.

I get my NFC Tags from BuyNFCTags.com. I think they have a lot more variety than TagStand. BuyNFCTags.com has Key Chains, Cards, Stickers, Wristbands and Tokens.

I use the NFC Task Launcher App.

Got it working. Instead of directly trying to activate Tasker through the NFC app, I decided to make a routine in Tasker that would switch mobile data off when my phone was connected to a specific wifi SSID (my router at home). So all I had to do was make a wifi toggle tag and, when it finds my home router, Tasker kicks in and turns off 3G/4G. Then, when I hit the tag again, wifi turns off and Tasker kicks in and turns mobile data back on. Nice!

I could have some fun with this.
