Temp Root with WiFi Access

So I will be traveling the next few weeks and will be unable to get any hotspots where I"m going. I need to be able to a galaxy tab to my EVO for work purposes (as I don't really need to travel with the laptop/the tab will do).

Is there any way to root the phone easily/temporarily/on the go? That will somehow give me access to the wifi tethering abilities of the EVO for free. I really have no need to remove the bloat as I don't use enough apps on a regular basis to need the extra space and I'm totally happy with the way the phone is running.

The thought of doing it the right way to get a full root is a bit overwhelming for me. I'm not a computer guy at all and it's a bit intimidating.

For the record I am running the most current version of Froyo Stock on the phone from Sprint.

Thanks guys for the help. Y'all never let me down!:)

Check out unrevoked. This will give you a full root and does all the work for you.

Basics of using unrevoked.

Visit unrevoked.com
Click on your device.
Download unrevoked 3.
Attatch your phone to computer.
Open up the file you downloaded. (Reflash-package.exe)
The application will run a script to root your phone.
Don't touch anything while its doing it.
It will reboot after it gets root.
It then flashes the clockworkmod recovery and reboots into recovery.
Scroll down to backup ans restore and choose it. Then choose backup and this will make you your back up if ever needed.

When I plug in the phone do I have to mount it, or which option do I choose?

Where does the backup file save to?

What is it backing up, the original stock stuff or....? What exactly?

Also will I still have Sense. I actually love sense and the widgets fit what I need perfectly.

In the link to the other thread you speak of recoveries from brick with an Ruu, what the heck is an ruu?

Sorry for the nuub ?s.

Thanks for all the help.

I went to the XDA thread and read up on it..the EVO is on the not compatible list (for permanent root). I guess I could try it tonight and see if it worked.

You don't need it to be able to permanently root for the WiFi tether. Just do the temporary root and you are set until you reboot your phone. You will also need a tether app like Wireless Tether.

Can I download that app w/o root...or will it not let me?

Yeah, you can download and install apps that require root access when you don't have root. They only have problems when you try to run them without root access. Just remember that if you've rebooted your phone to run the z4 temporary root before running the wireless tether.

awesome. I'll try it this weekend and see how it goes!

just to make it easier for you:

z4root

and

wifi tether
you can download the one that states ("HTC Evo 4G Android 2.1 (Eclair) Download Experimental. here N/A "
i did, and it works fine. i'm running Stock 2.2, with Z4ROOT for tethering, too

to make it abundantly clear:

1) menu>settings>applications>CHECKmark "unknown sources", then Debugging>check "USB Debugging"
2) download z4root & install
3) download wifi tether & install

then, run z4root, "temporary root" (it needs usb debugging checked to run)

it'll tell you you're temporarily rooted until your next reboot

then run wifi tether

cheers!

Thanks in process...I think (though I'm not sure if I'm getting scolded :D ). Just afraid to jack up my phone you know.

I'm giving it a shot tonight. We'll she how she blows.

one last question...debugging needs to be on the whole time once i root it...or just until I temp root and then it can be turned back off?

I've set plenty of people up with the z4root/wireless tether combo. If it didn't work, just reboot your phone and try to temp root it again with z4root. Then, good to go. Got a friend that uses it for Netflix fairly regularly through his PS3.

Will do.

**** edit ***** I have tried this 6 different times this morning. F it. I'm just gonna full root it. Hopefully I'm not posting back asking for help on how to unbrick this business. I think I'll be alright though.

Thanks for all the help everyone!
