temporarily losing contact info - HELP!

I'm having a lovely problem wherein all my contact information doesn't necessarily show up either in messaging, phone, or contacts. I'll go to make a phone call (to someone whose phone number I manually entered), and they won't be in the index on my contacts. Nor in the index on my phone list. They will, however, be listed in the call log and I can click on the most recent call from them and it pulls up the contact info with the phone number no problem. Eventually, I can find somewhere where they sent me a message or email and I can then pull up their info and call them from that, but it's a huge pain. Any idea as to how to fix this?

Few questions:
Are you inputting all your contacts from your phone?
Are you creating the contacts under your gmail or another account?

I'd try inputting all your contacts into your gmail address book on a computer. I don't know why this is happening to you, but this is the first thing I would try...
