Then something must be wrong with the phone itself.

Over at my house I barely get any Verizon coverage at all, and when I had my storm 2 I didn't get crap. Now where I got nothing with the BBerry I get at least 1 bar on my Droid.

I would try getting a replacement and see how that works out for you.

Perhaps more important than the number of bars is are you getting data and your call quality. I'm not convinced that different devices display reception strength equally.

Correct. Not every device displays coverage the same, or even as accurately. Another thing to pay attention to is your signal strength in actual numbers.

You know I was thinking about this the other day, but since I'm just starting to learn about phones and the sort I didnt think it was a correct theory.

Thanks for clearing it up. :D

Also do a *228, option 2 to make sure you have the latest PRL (51716). The updated PRL helped a bit with my wife's Eris, as we live in a low signal strength area.

confusing here too...if there isn't any signal, what would the extender extend?

It basically uses your broadband internet service connection to "extend" the Verizon network, up to 5000 sq. ft., in your home, around the network extender base station. It uses VOIP to send your cellphone convos to the Verizon network.

You can read about it here:

Verizon Network Extender

I have been contemplating getting one of these for my home as well. The Network Extender does not work for EVDO data, but the Droids have WiFi so this is not a big deal.

Network extender

I have the Verizon Network extender and it worked great with my BB Tour but not so well with my Incredible. Love the new phone and I don't want to go back to BB but need to be able to use the phone. Any help would be appreciated!

The latest PRL that I show on my phone is 51893.

So you might want to update your phone.. I just did mine before posting this..
