I am a newbie. I had to get that out of the way first.

I bought a Captivate a few weeks ago. Came with 2.1 OS. A few days ago I updated through the Kies software to 2.2. Now I have the Mobile AP option in the "Wireless and Network" settings. I have an old computer which I installed a wireless adapter to. Running Windows XP in it. So I click on the Mobile AP button and it connects but there is a little window down below that says "verifying". It blinks a few times then the AP disconnects and I get an ATT error message saying I do not have tethering with my plan. Blah blah blah ...

The point I want to make though is this. If I keep clicking on the Mobile AP button. And Im patient and do it several times ... eventually after saying "verifying" for a while, it WILL say "authenticated" and then BAM .... Im online with my desktop. I am tethering even as I type this message. I have done this 3-4 times now. The longest I have remained connected to my MobileAP has been 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Im not sure why I can do this but thought someone else might have had the same experience or could tell me why I am able to do it. I did nothing like rooting (dont know what that even is or how to do it) and I have not installed any app to allow me to tether either. So Im not sure why its working but it is. Just sporatically.

Sounds like a bug. AT&T just started allowing Android tethering, so their software is probably buggy. Can you check online and make sure it's not running up your bill? I wonder if the Inspire/Atrix folks have the same bug.

On my GT-i9000M Int'l versi?n of the Galaxy S I can use Mobile AP w/o any problems, this is the factory 2.2 froyo version of the Android OS w/o any carrier bloatware or restrictions.
