If I already own a Droid Bionic with data plan can I buy a Galaxy or XOOM with no data plan and tether it to my phone and get internet? Would I need a 3G or Wi-Fi only tablet.
Thanks

You should be able to. There are multiple options for tethering. Some require you to root the phone others not.

As for the tablet you would only need the 3G version if you were wanting to get it activated on a mobile network. not a requirement for tethering.

I also have the Bionic and a 3G Xoom and a wifi Xoom. I plan to sign up for the 4G hotspots on the Bionic so I can share the internet with all my devices.

Would this scenario work?... a Wi-Fi Xoom function off of a Bionic in a 3g or 4g setting. Also why would someone buy a 3g xoom without a data plan.

I have a wifi xoom and a bionic. I tether the xoom to the bionic via Bluetooth. There is a problem with the xoom that requires me to reboot the xoom to get the data connection to make via Bluetooth. Some other members have not been successful with getting Bluetooth tether to work at all.

I have read that the Bluetooth tether from Xoom to Bionic only works on 3g. If you live in an LTE market, you have to turn it off.

I wanted to be able to use it on 4g if I had to. Situations change

Yes situations change, so a 3G xoom will also work on Wi-Fi, correct? If down the road I decided to purchase an additional data plan then the xoom could be used as a stand alone (w/o the need of being paired to the Bionic). Can the xoom be hard tethered to the Bionic for a more successful pairing than the bluetooth?

Yes, a 3G/4G Xoom has WiFi and can be used as a standalone device on the Verizon network or with a 3G/4G phone through WiFi. The downside of using the Xoom as a standalone mobile broadband device is that there are no unlimited plans available for the Xoom. My 4G Bionic, on the other hand, has an unlimited plan that costs me $24 a month plus the hotspot, which costs $24 a month. This means that for $48 a month, I have an unlimited plan that I can share with both of my Xooms, all of my laptops, and anything else I want to tether to it.

I do like the fact that I can make it a standalone 3G/4G device down the the road, if I choose to do so though.

Have you been able to tether the Bionic while on 4g to your Wifi XOOM? I used to be able to tether my D2 to my XOOM using the bluetooth tether with no problems, but have been unable to get my 4G Bionic to successfully tether with my WiFi only XOOM
