Tethering the NC?

what would work for me using a NON-rooted droid 1 or my wife's droid x for my rooted NC? thanks guys

I don't have either phone, but generally, most unrooted Android phones will require an add-on plan with your carrier (if offered) to tether.

I'd start in the Droid forums, and call your carrier if you still don't find out.

Easyswitch widget works on the droit x. Set it up with all the buttons (2x6 I think). Set up 3g mobile hotspot on the phone (just in the app, don't call verizon to subscribe), connect with the nook and try to go to a website on the nook. It will redirect you to a verizon site. Using the easyswitch widget, turn off all the radios--i think its the 4th button in the top row-- then turn them back on. Now try to use the nook, it should work. I had to try it a few times to get it to work.

For NON ROOTED VERIZON FASCINATE USERS:

Download/install QPST (google it)
Put phone in modem mode (setting, wireless, enable dial up)
Run QPST Configuration from your computer
Add the port if it doesn't show up
• Go to ports then click on add new port. Uncheck "Show Serial and USB/QC diagnostic ports only". When you see your phone you can add it.
Once you see your phone in qpst go to the menu, start clients and start service programming.
Click "read from phone" (password is 000000)
Tab over to M.IP
Change the profile 0 under M.IP from number@dun.vzw3g.com to number@vzw3g.com
Change the profile 1 under M.IP to enable and change tethered NAI to number@vzw3g.com
Click write to phone
Phone will reboot
Be sure to turn modem mode off or data WILL NOT WORK (setting, wireless, uncheck enable dial up)
Use the built in Verizon mobile hotspot application

chaloney,

thanks for pointing me in the right direction for free wireless tethering my NC to my phone. but i'm not too bright, and i cannot understand what you mean by 'setting up 3g mobile hotspot in the app.' i have downloaded the easyswitch widget, whose description says it controls "hotspot," but that is not one of the buttons available in the widget. could you please spell it out for me if you have the time. thanks alot

open the app drawer on the x. in the top left there is an app called 3G mobile hotspot. tap the and go through the setup (I don't remember exactly what it entails add its been a few weeks and it is my wife's phone). it took a few tried to get it to work

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but would any of those approaches work with an unrooted sprint EVO?

If you don't root the EVO, you'll most likely need to pay for the SPrint Hotspot service ($30/month)..

I, like many others, went the cheap route and rooted my EVO, but don't use the Wireless tether on it (I have an Overdrive on my plan).

chaloney, since you have been using this tethering function, are you sure verizon is not charging you for the 3g hotspot service? everything else i read says this can't be done with a rooted phone. or does the easyswitch somehow bypass the paid service??

Correct me if i'm wrong but the Wireless tether app uses a different service from the 3g hotspot so it doesn't go through Verizon billing. If you are not rooted and use the 3g hotspot you will get charged. If you ARE rooted and use Wireless tether from the market or Barnacle WiFi you will not be charged. I can't speak to French's post above however.

Ok, so this is paid service. I guess I wasn't clear when I asked originally. I don't want to pay more. So maybe I will try to root my Droid1 and do what everyone else is suggesting with the tethering apps to see if that works. No way am I going to try to root my wife's droid x, that could be a mess if I screwed up. Thanks guys.

i am using mytouch 4g and have no issues using wifi hotspot, turns the mt4g into a hotspot, works good

Only used it once, tobsee if it works. According tobthe page you are redirected to, 3g mobile hotshot is a service you have to specifically sign up for, and I haven't. Saw an explanation of how easyswotch works on droidlife, but I don't remember it. According to what I've read this should work without having to pay $20/month

using the vzw hotspot fix above will likely keep your tethered data free as long as you don't go nuts. The disadvantage is instead of seeing your phone's ip on the network, they see Device@vzw.net or whatever. This allows them to track your tethered data usage and they can and have charged folks for doing it. PDAnet, and wifi tether iirc are designed to still show up as your ip, thus keeping the fact your are tethered completely transparent to Big Red. (15gb max data per month or expect throttling or cancellation)

Anyone using an Incredible running CM7 Nightly builds have any issues tethering the NC? I plan on picking up a NC in the next few days but want to make 100% sure that I can connect to my Incredible when out and about.

The biggest issue seems to be you need an infrastructure network, not ad hoc. If you can do that you should be good to go.

Well I went to Barnes & Noble to play with a NC first hand and it connected to my Incredible without any issues. So that's good to know! I really liked everything about the NC so I will be pulling the trigger on one asap.
