So, I came home today expecting to be able to get a lot of work done on my computer. When I started it up I realized my lovely roommate hadn't paid Comcast in awhile...

I searched tethering on my phone downloaded an app and its working( slow, but working) What is Verizon going to say? Will they not notice, or am I going to get a huge bill next month? If they are going to bill me, I would rather go to a coffee shop than tether.

If you guys have any info that would be great. I searched the friends but couldn't find an answer.

That brings up a question... I bought the easytether app ($9.95) because I didnt feel like paying recurring fee. It works pretty good, but I just got it a week or two ago. Are you saying that even if I pay for an app, if I am running an unrooted phone, verizon will still charge me?? Havent gotten my first bill yet, so I dont know.

Thanks for any info.

The tethering apps on 2.1 are fine, but the kernel that comes with 2.2 has some sort of tether monitoring in it somewhere. I think there have been efforts to disable this, but there are no guarantees. If you want/need to tether, it might be a good idea to drop back to Android 2.1 for the time being.

If you're using a plug in tether they won't charge you. I'm pretty sure because the app handles all of the data so they can't tell it's from another device. In any event, I have half a dozen customers that have been running it for months with no repercussions. Being that verizon doesn't offer a corded tethering service for the droids, only WiFi tether they have no pricing structure to charge you for usage. You'll be fine.

Are you rooted? If not you're getting charged.
Sorry, not true. I've been running PdaNet for over a year on both my Eris (2.1 V3 leak) and now on my stock Fascinate tethered over USB and I've never ever had any billing issue with Verizon.

I have had no problem using easytether. I don't use it that much, but works well when I do. As long as you don't go crazy on bandwidth I don't think they will ever care.

Easytether

The verizon service rep asked me about the easytether app on my phone last week when I took it in for a battery - I told him I'd only used it once to play with it (which isn't far from the truth). I've used it a tradeshow and when my twc modem falters. The last system update I ran changed two settings that messed with easytether - had to change them back to use it again.

That's why I hide any apps I don't want VZW to see when I take my phone in I don't want them making any notes on my account or anything. With ADW or Launcherpro you can hide them.

How exactly do you go about hiding an app?
