Text Markup 6500%

America's Biggest Rip-offs - Text messages - 6,500% markup (1) - CNNMoney.com

Does anyone know of any app that can be used as text messages? I know i can use IM like yahoo, skype etc.. but is there an app that would let you send/receive text messages?

On a side note, we should all stop using text messages and use alternate methods. I know it's continent but this is just ridiculous.

google voice. i use it to send and receive all my texts. i have it autosync on my tb, so i get notified right away when someone sends me a text via gv. also, i've used yim on my pc to send and receive texts from a cell phone for years now.

How do you keep others from using your cell number and accruing 10X 6500% text per use?

Have you been using GV so long no one knows your cell number?

I use yahoo as well. It still doesn't stop people from text me directly. That of course costs me. I don't mind paying for things but I just don't want to pay for text messages because it doesn't cost them much and they charge more for it.

btw textplus app works well too. If I send someone text, they will reply and it will be free for me.

well, i hardly use texts, but anyone who texts me, i'll text them back from gv and tell them to use that number.

I just texted everyone who sends me text messages using my GV number, and told them I changed my cell number. Worked fine and no one texts me using my cell number anymore.

Have your carrier add text blocking to your cell number. I have text, MMS, and video messages blocked to my cell number.

I sent out a mass email with my Google Voice #, posted on Facebook, Twitter, and then used my Google Voice number until all my friends and family caught on. Took about a month but eventually got all to change my number saved in their phone my Google Voice number. Now that's all I give out.

Google Voice is free and has so many great features. Free SMS, free visual voicemail, call blocking with options. Love it.

Saves me $20/month. I also use google talk.

That will work fine for 2011. Google Voice is only free for 2011.

Why do you say it's only free for 2011? I have never heard that before.

I also use Google Voice and have blocked my cell phone's text messaging service. Saves money, and I have a ton of control over call forwarding. Absolutely love it.

Domestic calling through the gmail browser client is free through 2011 (log into Gmail on your computer and you'll see what I'm talking about). I'm not aware of.any cutoff date for free use of Google Voice. The OP may may be thinking of the Gmail voice feature rather than Google Voice.

ah.. I meant domestic calling.. and assumed Google Voice won't be free also. If that's not the case then this sound like perfect solution.

Isn't this thread about SMS? I haven't heard of any charges for Google Voice SMS. That's what my post was about .

This makes me even more annoyed that texting isn't included in data plans. If they really are such a negligent amount of data, then there isn't a reason they shouldn't be.

Ugh. Gotta love capitalism.

I use Google Talk with all of my Android owning friends and Google Voice for all others. I have messaging blocked on my phone.

Sent from my Thunderbolt.
