Text messaging questions.

Hi.
Just got my Optimus S and LOVE it. The wife is getting one in purple.
Anyway, I have a couple of questions in the text messaging genre.

At work, I have to keep my phone's ringer off and on vibrate only.
I keep it propped up on my desk facing me.
If I get a regular call, the screen comes on with the info on the incoming call which is cool as that is the way it is supposed to work.
If I get a text, it does not do that, it only vibrates. Also, if the volume is on/all the way up, it only vibrates when I get a text. The screen does not come on letting you know there is a new message.
Am I missing something?

Also, is there a way to make "Phone ringtones" also be "Notification ringtones" as listed in Settings under Sound?

If these answers are already here, I have missed them.

Not sure if it works this way with your phone, but handcent pops up messages even with my screen off.

Found and downloaded Handcent and it is working great.

Next question: When I get texts, I get two smiley faces at the top of the screen. One for the stock "Messaging" system and one for the Handcent service.
How do I deactivate the stock "Messaging" icon so I don't have two for every one message?

go to the stock text messaging...(like if your going to text someone) click ur menu button and then select SETTINGS ...then once in text settings..UNCHECK notifications. and your good to go.

Hey if you have songs or noise notifications you can get this app in the android market called ringdroid its free and it lets you make and put what ever sound you want and you can use it for notifications, alarms, ringtones its just like the hero function that automaticly lets you do it but better

yellow screen?

Wondering if anybody is having the same issue. When I receive a picturemail in a text from another phone the picture shows up in the text message area, in handcent, but when I tap on the picture its takes me to a yellowish screen, won't let me delete it, or see the picture that was sent to me. Any body with the same?

I found flash notify on another thread & it works great. You have a good amount of control over how you are alerted on text & missed calls.

2 days ago i got a text and the icon on the title bar at the top shows a envelope as normal but when i touch it to open it just goes to my inbox and the text isnt there, but the icon and brief show of the message remains. does anybody know how i can get rid of this icon, its driving me nuts.
any help would be appreciated.

i take it your talking about using the stock txt msg.
if you are wanting to rid of the icon that comes up on the notification bar(status bar)...

1. go to your messaging (where your able to select a text/compose msg etc)

2. click on ur menu button (on the phone)

3. select settings (bottom right corner)

4. scroll down to Notification Settings - UNSELECT (uncheck) NOTIFICATIONS

and that should do it.


pretty much can take same steps if using other txt msg clients. (kik, handcent, etc). (just have to be in that certain app/client to apply changes etc)
