Text notifications not alerting me. Just a number on the icon...I have no clue how this happened

Today I was one my phone throughout the day with no problems what so ever. I got to work and now I am not receiving notifications when I get a new text message. Nothing is showing up in the lock screen, it wont vibrate when its on vibrate, It wont sound when the volume is all the way up. I have to actually check my phone every couple seconds to see if there is a number on the message icon or not to know where I received a new text or not. What happened?

Have you tried clearing the cache in the Messenger Application? Here's how you do it with marshmallow 6.0.

No sound on my text notifications as well. I've cleared cache & data on msg apps. My volume settings are correct.
I even deleted the messenger app and reinstalled it.
Any thoughts?... Thanks

Make sure easy mute is off and do not disturbed is off in settings.

Strange...I had this happen to me yesterday. I got 4 text messages and even though the sound was on, I never got the notification sound. I turned phone off and then back on and so far it is working again. Weird

My wife had this same issue yesterday on her S7 active, we fixed it by going into settings and under notifications, messages and contacts were checked as off, turned them on, no problem since.
