Texts not being received

I just started having this problem with a Sprint customer. The damn 4 simply will not receive texts, but it will send. Started about 2 weeks ago.

It is not the SIM. I put the SIM in the old Nexus S and things are working just fine.

The phone is rooted, but running the original 4.2. I'm having trouble getting some answers about a computer so I haven't put on a custom ROM. Nor have I updated. Google always adds too much crap I don't want. Phone was running all my apps just fine. Doing phone calls just fine. I can talk to the Sprint customer on the phone all day - no problem. Just no text.

I've rebooted the phone, removed and put the SIM back in, and still no joy.

I'd love to back up the phone, but it's a computer problem. There's a post about 7 being a biatch, and I can't get an answer if virtual XP on 7 pro will work. That XP complains about no security, but 7 has it.

Any ideas what else I can do with this phone to get text service back?

Actually started about 3 weeks ago. I tried to send an MMS using Handcent. Phone chewed on the MMS for 20 minutes and the photo was only 27K! I resize pics myself before sending.

Went on vacation to Utah, Handcent refused to send any MMS. So I added Chomp. That worked fine until a week and a day later on return to Colorado. Tried unfreezing the default text, that doesn't work either.

Something has buggered somewhere on the phone. Any help would be welcome.

More than likely your APN settings are incorrect. What cellular network are you on?

I cleaned out texts. I save the things since none of my friends can remember what they said yesterday never mind a week ago.

I don't think it's the Nexus, now. I was out yesterday, and so was she. All texts came in just fine. As soon as she got home and tried to text, I never got the text.
I think she has the Galaxy S3 on Sprint with unlimited everything.
She does have trouble with voice in her condo. If she moves from room to room, she loses the call. Texts have been fine until around 2 weeks ago now.
She went to Denver, and Denver just converted to LTE. She said that LTE service had appeared on the phone.

I've been reading the Sprint problems, and most of the time it seems to be a tower, but Sprint won't confirm. They say they are showing good service, so your problem doesn't exist according to complaints. This problem is usual with the Iphone, but she has a Samsung.

She also turns the phone off and on to clear it out so she should be on a local tower.

I have never dropped a call in my house with TMO unless I accidentally turned the call off. I can wander all over the house, inside and out, and no problem.

I don't think I'll be able to convince her. She can't understand why I like TMO.

It is important to understand that "texts" come in two different forms, SMS and MMS (wikipedia is your friend). SMS texts are transmitted over the "old" cellular network paths in an unused bit of the housekeeping signals your phone is constantly exchanging with the towers in the immediate area. It is extremely rare for SMS to not work so long as there is any cell signal at all.

MMS messages, on the other hand, are transmitted as data and require that the phone has a working data connection and the phone's APN settings must be correct.

If your girlfriend is trying to send "texts" which include pictures or videos, or if she is sending a single text to multiple recipients, then she is by default actually sending MMS, not SMS, and must have a working cellular data connection or the text will not go through.

You are preaching to the choir. I knew that years ago. These are just plain sms saying "TEST"

I can send SMS/ MMS, I can receive SMS/MMS from others, just not her or her husband's phones. I resize all photos myself and don't depend on app so size is not an issue.

Yet when she was out shopping yesterday, everything came through. So it has to do with location. Unfortunately, I was out, too.
