Texts showing up in wrong app

Hey everyone! I've noticed after updating my LG G6 to Android 8.0.0 that some texts that I receive will only show up in the stock text app (the yellow "Messaging" text app). The default app I use is Pulse for my texting. Like I said, it's not all texts, but only some.

My wife is experiencing the same issue, same phone, same OS, same default text app, same result.

Anyone else notice this issue after 8.0.0? Any fox for it? TIA!

Pulse is definitely default. like I said, it's not every text. Some randomly come through in the stock app.

Have you tried restarting your phone to see if it was just a random glitch? Of course, that wouldn't explain why you and your wife are both experiencing that problem. Perhaps uninstall your Pulse app and then re-install it again and see what happens. Keep us posted!

Yeah I haven't uninstalled it. The weird thing is that even though my default is Pulse, the only way I knew the texts were showing up in the stock messaging app was because the text notifications were from that app. Not Pulse. And the text never shows up in pulse at all. Really weird.

After I initially posted this, I realized that another G6 user is having the same issue I am as soon as he upgraded to 8.0.0. And he's using a different app than I am.

Is it random, or all texts from certain people?

I have a theory that depending on the carriers involved, some texts could be coming in as RCS messages, which the stock app can handle but our favorite 3rd party ones cannot. This could be an explanation if all texts from certain people are doing this.

If this is the case, going into the stock messaging settings and disabling RCS (whatever it is called... advanced messaging or whatever) will tell the network not to send you RCS anymore and everything should go to the right place.

bobdob likely has the correct answer. Go into the stock app and long press one of the messages that came only to the stock app. Then select Details. If the message type is something other than Text Message or Mulit-Media Message (like Chat or Advanced Message) it's likely RCS and not handled by your 3rd party app.

It looks like the one message came through as Chat. But I never had this issue when I had Nougat. And I've always had this 3rd party app. I don't have any issue sending from my 3rd party app to that RCS contact.

i had the same issue, but i use android messages (which should be able to handle all types of text message). I ended up uninstalling and re installed the app and havent seen the issue since.

I have a G6 as well. I had this problem with Nougat and it was very intermittent. Over the course of 6 months I had 1 text from my son and 1 text from my brother come through as Chat. All of the other texts from them came through as regular texts (same phones). I was using Textra at the time and had the same symptom as you, these two texts showed up in the stock app as Chat messages.

I have no idea why some of them randomly come through as chat. Never did figure it out. But I don't thinks there's anything you can change on your end to fix it unfortunately. I've just gone back to the stock app as it works fine for my purposes.

Depending on your carrier, you may not have had an RCS-capable default messaging app prior to Oreo, which means you wouldn't ever have received RCS messages before, they'd all come as SMS. Or maybe it's just coincidence and something changed with your contact that they suddenly got RCS capability around the same time you got Oreo.

And you sending messages is not related to this. From your 3rd party app you were always (and still are) sending SMS only, until it supports RCS.

I just downloaded Android Messenger yesterday. I'll see what it does for me. Soon, Google will be rolling out a new background implementation called "Chat" which will be something that carriers will have to agree to have built into the phones they sell. That will allow RCS messages to be received no matter what app you use. It seems that pretty much the only apps that will accept RCS are ones that are ran or supported by Google. I've been researching a lot the past couple days. Haha

I had the same issue using textra and my messages came in to the stock sms app. I ended up in installing and reinstalling textra and my issue went away.

I've had that problem for awhile. I have a V30+ and I use Android Messages app as default. It seems to only happen when I get messages from other LG users and not all the time. My wife has an LG but she uses Messages too and it hasn't happened with texts from her.
