The car dock is GREAT

The holster case is the one I used. I don't have audio problems with it, but it doesn't recognize the phone to put it in dock mode automatically. I think I'll just return the case and go without.

Well.. I picked up my dock today at the Sprint store, and was able to successfully mod it to my Proclip vehicle mount.. Took a bit of dremel work, and some drilling, along with opening up the dock itself - but in the end, it game out pretty good. I'm not a fan of windshield suction cup mounts..

Proclip is a great system for mounts in a vehicle.. The vehicle mounts are specific to the vehicle, and the device mounts are specific to the device. I decided to mod the Motorola mount because I wanted to retain the functionality that it offers (the big one being that I no longer need to plug in any cables for audio and power when I get in the truck).

Anyway, pictures for anyone interested:

I love what you did. May have to invest myself.

So, I've run into some issues with the car dock and the Photon.. Not related to my modifications - but rather, the behavior of the phone when it is in the dock..

First - I have issues with Bluetooth -- despite unchecking the option to 'Use for media audio', the phone does not remember the setting once the bluetooth headset is turned off -- the next time the headset is turned on, it steals the media audio from the phone every time.

Second - I figured with the car dock that it would allow you to use the microphone on the phone for voice commands - that doesn't appear to be the case.. If I pull up the car dock menu for making calls, it does show bluetooth as an option.. It was highlighted on my phone.. If I turned it off, and made a call - I was not able to hear any of the voice commands, nor use the phone's microphone to issue commands..

Would you mind sharing how you modified the mount to work with the pro clip? I am looking to do the same thing in my vehicle. I have no problem using a dremel, but its always nice when you have someone who has done it already. I would appreciate your input.

If I could do it again, Id probably do it a little different than I had this time.. I may still change it..

I did it by screwing the swivel mount from my ProClip directly to the dock.. I did this by using the dremel to make the back of the mount flat, instead of having the attachment for the suction cup portion of the Motorola mount... One of the issues that I came up with when I did this is that by the time you are done dremeling the dock, the plastic is a bit on the thin side. I screwed the ProClip swivel base directly the the Moto dock, putting the screws in from the inside of the dock back cover. This sworks -- but every now and then the ProClip swivel needs to be tightened, which is a hassle because you have to take the dock apart to get to the screws. I ended up making it fairly tight, and using Loctitie to help keep the tension screw from backing out.

What I would do differently is this:

1) Dremel the back of the dock until you have a flat surface in the middle to which you can mount something

2) Pick up a set of these from ProClip: ProClip Move Clip - Move Clip Kit (1 Male and 1 Female Plate)?-?ProClip Car Mounts for Mobile Phones, GPS, and Handheld Devices

3) You can attach one side of the "Move Clip" to the base by one of two methods. On my Palm Pre, to mount a Touchstone, I used 3M Dual-Lock, which is like rigid velcro. (They usually use that for attaching toll tags to windshields) - That works very well, and will not require you to open the dock. It may be hard to find though. The 2nd method is to open the dock by getting the small rubber covers off each of the screws, and then separating the two section, and inserting the screws from the inside portion of the cover into the back of the "move clip".
4) Attach the opposite "move clip" to your existing vehicle mount.

That will allow a stationary mount, not swivel.. Im sure you can think of how to incorporate a swivel into that system if you wanted to add one (the 'move clips' are extremely handy for this type of thing.)

Thanks for that detailed write up. Just wanted to pass this on to you and to anyone else that may find it useful.

I have a mount in my Mustang from Pro Fit International that I used with my portable satellite radio that I no longer use. I have been trying to figure out how to integrate the car dock with it. My dad has a Garmin Nuvi so I checked to see if the ball on its mount would fit the socket of the motorola mount and it does. This is perfect because if you buy a mount from pro fit international, they have the garmin nuvi adapter that will work perfectly with the stock motorola car dock.

This is the route I am going to take as it will allow me to switch between my pro fit mount and the stock motorola suction mount for when I am in a different vehicle. I think this will work perfectly. I hope others find this as useful as I did. And no, I do not work for Pro Fit International. ;)
