SO I have had the HTC One now for a few days. I figured like any device we are all gonna have some complaints. So I'd like to list off mine. But do note over all I love this device so far! I also came from the Samsung Galaxy S3. So please take these with a grain of salt!

1) Notification Light

Yes we have all heard this! Having the options of different colored LEDs are a nice feature. With the S3 I had it setup pretty good. Blue for email, Green for text messaging and purple for a VM! With the HTC One we only seem to have one option. Green! I wish I could assign other colors and maybe HTC will make these changes with their next device.

What I did like about the LED light is the fact that it flashes quick and its not as noticable. Now that must sound funny but having it built into the speaker grill is a great choice! It doesn't act like a beacon of light. Makes driving home late at night a lot less OCD for me when I am stopped! (Not moving at all! I swear!)

2) Charging times

It seems to take forever to charge this phone up. Again I'm sure we have all heard about it. However after reading a few reviews its clearly stated because they want the in house battery to last you a life time. So part of me can understand this choice. But it brings an announce to my day when I have to double the time on the charger.

But what I do like is the fact that I seem to get better battery life out of the HTC One in a day than the S3. I still think its to early to clearly tell but its looking good over all. After I adjust to it I'm sure it will be one less complaint.

3) Notification Bar

To be very honest this is a double edge sword for me. It just seems way to clear! I miss having my WiFi, Bluetooth and background data buttons there. Instead they clutter it with a battery save option...Made me think "Really HTC? WTF!" But I have figured out a way of getting rid of it. (Long press the app and open it up then force close that damn thing!) With the same token it's also nice to see a clean look here.

With that being said I got some great advice from someone! If your like me and hating missing the old buttons and the battery % just download the app "Power Toggles" from the Google Play store. It will fix both of the issues. Best of all its free! But donate to the dev like I have.

4) The Button configuration

They are both on the wrong side! Both the power and home/back buttons. This is all based on ones opinion. If anything the Home and back buttons should have been changed. I also wish there is a way to make my current soft button a power like button as well.

Now after having the S3 I came to HATE the home button. I know it's just me but I rather have the soft buttons.

5) Bloatware

I think we can agree that we all hate this. Some of the apps we should be able to disable forever. But some of them we are not allowed too. Such as the messaging app. I don't use it. I have Google Voice so I dont have to pay for what should be free. (Texts!)

I can root it a remove it. I have just been lazy with this. After its new feel is gone I will root it and do away with it!

And so far thats pretty much it. I would like to add that none of these are a deal breaker! I still love the HTC One. I thought some of these small changes could have been better. Also att needs to get off of their asses and release the soft button update! I can not wait until that is fix. Over all this device is a great buy and I still would have bought it over the S4. I needed a change from the S3 and HTC did a great job supplying me with that need! It's a great device and I think no one should stray away from it if your in the market for a new Smartphone.

So what are your guy's dislikes? Have any advice for any of my issues? Feel free to jump on in with civil replies!

I personal dont dislike anything about the phone. There are a few things that i think could be done to make it a little better but its all about personal preference. These topics have been covered multiple times in threads and the facts are that things are the way they are.

Notification light i dont really care about as long as it flashes. That way i can see it from my desk or wherever my phone may be laying around. The notification bar can easily be updated to show all your toggle options by downloading a simple app to manage all your connections.
The charging time is long but its a new type of battery that htc is using in this phone that is built to have a longer life so it takes longer to fully charge it. Yes its a bit annoying but as a user i adjust and just plug it in at night or a random top off during the day.
Bloat? Well HTC has done a better job with their bloat oh and that typically depends on the carrier and what they decide to put on . Just enjoy the phone and adapt. Find apps that suit your needs or root it and then make it what you want it to be.

#1, 3 & 4 are why I can't use the One as my daily driver. You aren't alone with those complaints.

I'm annoyed with HTC phones in general that they don't allow LED notifications when the phone is charging. I'm generally charging 100% of the time at home and that's generally the only time when I will leave my phone unattended. As a result, I often have notifications that go unnoticed (oxymoron?) for extended periods of time.

As far as the capacitive buttons, there have been so many different variations that there is no correct one. Just adjust and let it go. Also, the LED could be four or even six dots large to make it more visible from a distance.

Why is not being able to disable the stock messaging app a big deal?

We have already determined the only reason for more notifications light options is to discerne between texts from your wife and texts from your girlfriend. :p

You may try the app Auto Screen On to allow you to wake the phone by tapping the proximity sensor. Works pretty well and doesn't seem to do much battery draining. This also works to wake your phone when you remove it from your pocket, or if you lay your phone face down, when you lift it the screen comes on. All of which I find pretty great.

Charge time hasn't been much of an issue with me. If you use the stock charger it goes from 20% to full in about 3 hours. I charge overnight so the time it takes doesn't matter. If you run low during the day, an hour on a usb charger seems to provide about 4 to 5 hours additional use. It would be nice to get fully charged in one hour in that circumstance, but not really necessary for my use.

I'm sorry madlaw but how does the button layout KEEP you from using the phone full time? I mean, I've had my Sprint One since launch and by now I find myself pressing the wrong locations on my EVO 3D which I keep around as a wireless mouse. I guess I'm just really confused how a certain button layout could trip someone up so badly.
To answer the op I guess one thing I would like to have seen is a nice hardware camera button. That and if I had my choice I would have sacrificed a little thickness for a slightly bigger battery. Nothing huge, just a few hundred more mah. Other than that I don't really have any complaints.

The button layout is atrocious and a source of constant frustration. More than that, the lack of a home button means being stuck with a power button in the wrong spot and difficult to activate by feel. Worse still is the lack of a menu key which puts the dreaded black bar on many popular apps, leading to a cramped screen IMO.

Not throwing rocks here, but this is strictly a personal preference based on previous devices.

I disagree that the layout is "atrocious" but I came from an iPhone to the One and thus shifting from iOS to Android. I don't have the same frame of reference or that is, one that is based on another albeit similar device. I will admit that having a front mounted hard-button that would wake/turn on the device would be nice only because I was accustomed to it with an iPhone but it is not a show-stopper now.

I will say that I MUCH prefer the One over the S4. My wife an I purchased both my One and her S4 the same day (she was coming from an iPhone 3GS). She is technologically challenged so I have spent as much time wirking with her S4 as I have with my One. There are some items that are arguably more convenient on the S4 but the One is a better overall package IMHO. I offer this opinion with zero bias and if I liked the S4 better, I could easily swap since my wife couldn't care less...

Get over the menu key. Google wants it gone. I agree the black bar is stupid but that is purely the app developers fault. After getting this phone I was more mad at my favorite apps being so far behind on Google guidelines and they are who you should complain to. Not trying to argue but it's just the way it is.

How exactly is the power button on the "wrong" spot?

I can buy into that by now home row buttons should be customizable by the individual user, but to argue a "right or wrong" layout is silly.

Yeah, it is just a matter of what you are used to. It did take a couple days to get used to but after that, when I pick up my samsung, I struggle to find the power button and volume keys.

If you are going back and forth between 2 phones, it is very frustrating, and of course, you will put the blame on the one that is different that what you are used to. If you are just using one device all the time, it isn't an issue.

Would I rather have them in the same locations on all phones? Yeah, that would make switching back and forth a lot easier. I probably prefer the samsung locations, but it isn't a big deal.

Meh, if Google wants it gone so bad why did the award a Nexus Experience to Samsung with it's menu key on the S4? That's not a very compelling argument. HTC's market share is so small that it isnt cost effective for app developers to update their apps to reach such a small number of end users. This was an HTC fail not Google or the app developers.

Would it be better if I edited to say "wrong spot 4 me and that of several reviewers and the OP?"

I used the One exclusively 4 a week pre-S4 and went bonkers with the button placement and in the few hours I used it again yesterday before it was commandeered by Mrs. Madlaw the same frustrations re-emerged.

That is not a very good argument regarding "rewarding" a nexus experience. I do agree that to the extent that it is a problem (not much), it is HTC's problem.

You answered your question about the s4 getting a vanilla build. Market share. Google wants the pure android experience on what will doubtless be a huge seller this year. It doesn't mean Google wants hardware to be like the s4,that's what they make nexus devices for. I would guess it has more to do with market saturation of vanilla android than with Google liking what Samsung is doing with hardware. I'm just so confused how you can't acclimate. For five years I've had phones with power buttons on the top right. Some were reachable by thumb, others not but all were basically the same place so I'm pretty used to it, or I was. It took me one day, just one, to have the left button placement in motor memory. I'm honestly sympathetic that you have so much trouble but it seems like user error more than design fault IMHO. If I switched to the s4 today I can tell you the last thing I'd complain about is button placement despite the fact that I know I prefer top mounted to avoid accidental screen shut off when trying to hold my phone and do other things. I'd get used to it. If you are this vocal about phone button placement how do you cope when driving a new car or using a new computer? Just a thought. No hate ;)

My wife has had the One since 10pm last night, coming from 2 previous iPhones. She knows nothing of the S4 or my preferences for phones etc. She just told me at lunch that the power button and the lack of a home button that wakes the phone are driving her crazy and she misses her iPhone. She also complained about the lack of responsiveness of the home button. FWIW

My best friend, who got the One two days after launch, has trouble adjusting to anything new. She almost refuses to watch a movie she hasn't seen (yeah I know, don't ask) or use electronics she's not used to has not said one thing to me about button placement. So obviously your mileage may vary. As for the home button I can only hope you non Sprint users get the update soon as I've had zero issues with it since the update. I guess if you can't adjust you can't adjust. There's not much more to say.

Side note, I'd be questioning your issues no matter what phone. It's just button placement. So long as the power button isn't on the middle of the back plate I can't say any one manufacturer made a "wrong" choice with their design. Best of luck. I hope you find a device you are happy with. It's just silly when you claim things like unusable and such because the device is not what you are accustomed to.
