The Evo 3D won't be the same breakout hit that the Evo 4G was

Why?

Well think about it. When the Evo 4G came out, it was truly a beast phone by every meaning of the word. There was literally no other phone out in the world that could touch it. The Evo 4G brought us

* The first 4G phone in the US (And was the fastest in the US)
* The first phone in the US with both a rear and front facing camera
* The first phone in the US with built in support for video calling on 3G, 4G and wifi.
* The first phone in the US with 720p video capture and playback.
* The first phone in the US with HDMI out connectivity.
* The first phone in the US with a Kickstand.
* One of the first Android phones in the US with built in wifi Hotspot connectivity. (Sorry, Palm pre and Nexus One w/2.2 update beat it to the punch)

and was the first Android Phone in the US with a supersized screen, that people fell in love with.

---------------------

The Evo 3D brought us the first phone in the US with 3D photo and video capture as well as playback.

Thats about it. The Atrix 4G was the first Dual Core 4G phone (though many would argue its not real 4G, but for the sake of argument...) Other than that, what new tech is the Evo 3D bringing that no one else has? Don't get me wrong, I picked up the Evo 3D on day one of its release and I love it. Besides battery life, and that annoying facebook birthday bug in the Contacts, I really don't have any complaints. Its dual core, 4G, super fast, an Amazing UI and a very overall solid design that turn heads. Oh yeah, the 3D is nice too. Its why I said HTC should have just went ahead and put NFC in this thing to spruce up the specs a little more.

----------------------

One more thing, I saw a news report the other day that said that 3D movie ticket sales were on a downward trend. People are getting turned off by it. This could have have something to do with the ridiculous price of the tickets, but people just prefer 2D movies thats not taxing their brains as much, so they may pass on 3D tech in their mobile Devices. For further proof, look at the sales of the Nintendo 3DS. The sales were good to be sure, but failed to meet the sales numbers of its predecessor.

HTC did an excellent job in ensuring that use of the 3D features were optional, but its marketing should reflect that. Next year, I would like to see HTC keep the 3D tech included, but make the phone thinner, the 3D better on the eyes and bring back my damn kickstand! That is all.

It's hard to say it will be, but here are some reasons:

1. some people who originally bought the EVO 4g don't see it as a huge upgrade. I don't know why because it is.

2. some people focus too much on 3d and think that's all the phone does, and ignore the specs. I have friends who ordered the Nexus S because they don't like 3d. I was like wow..... dumb consumers

3. It was the first sprint 4g phone, only 1 phone can be the first.

4. Competition is heating up for sprint w/: nexus s, moto photon, evo3d and rumors of Galaxys2

5. Some people are mad that they can't upgrade, I have friends in this boat.

I agree with 05 TypeS, the Evo 3D is being underestimated due to it's addition of a feature!

This phone could have come without 3D and it would have been the same great device it is now, the 3D is just an added feature. The average consumer doesnt see that, though.

People do think it's only a MINOR upgrade (are you serious?!) It has the most top-notch specs in the US industry to date! Even better than T-Mobile's Sensation 4G, besting it with a full 1GB of RAM.

People hear 3D and they get all crazy and start assuming BS. The Evo 3D has plenty of potential to beat out the Evo 4G in terms of sales.

The question of if it will? No, I doubt. People dont use their brains too often.

I would have to agree but it's no fault of the EVO 3D. It's a testament to the fact that we now have more choices on Sprint. What other high end phones did the EVO 4G compete with on Sprint?

I didn't buy it for 3D. I bought it for 1) it's an Evo family phone and 2) it's dual core

I think compared to the 4G Shift, the 3D is getting MUCH more attention.

First, let me say, I love my Evo 3D. I think it is definitely an upgrade over the original Evo 4G, dual core 1.2ghz processor, qhd display, higher internal storage capacity and as gimmicky as it is 3D technology on a phone is kinda cool and pretty dang impressive. But, I must agree and say the Evo 3D may not be as succesful as the original because a lot of people on Sprint are happy with what they have now... Evo 4G, Epic 4G, Evo Shift 4G...etc. With Sprint changing the premiere membership criteria, alot of customers have already used their upgrade, no yearly upgrade means people will probably stay with what they have, and may not feel the need to upgrade to the 3D. I loved the original and that phone will always have a place in my heart, but the 3D is a better device... Hands down...

I was a pretty smart consumer. Ctried both and realized the 3d was a big upgrade over the EVO, but not really an upgrade over the Nexus. On paper, yeah, it definitely is, in real life its not. Real world performance and benchmarks prove this. I decided to buy a Nexus off contract and save my upgrade and see what comes out in the next few months.

And the OP is absolutely right, the 3d will not be the same hit as the EVO. There are just too many things going against it. A much better range of phones coming out is definitely one of them. When the EVO came out it was the only thing. That's not the case anymore. Every store I have been in has the 3d in stock and speaking to the salesman leads me to believe not nearly as many sold as they expected. I'm getting calls from Sprint and the Radio Shack I bought my EVO at trying to get me to come in and upgrade. Sprint isn't talking about huge sales like they did with the EVO. A lot of people don't like the idea of 3d, whether you can turn it off or not

I have had an EVO 3D since two days before the first day. I have it as a replacement for the Hero. Esthetically it does not compare with the EVO 4G. The presence that the 4G creates is due to its screen size, large font and relaxed fit of the widgets.
The 3D has great technical specs, but really small font, a screen which is 3/8" too narrow and a tight feel to it's screen. It's way waaaay better than the Hero !
If HTC was doing something special the the "extra" core, I think we'd have pr guys telling us all about it. So there too is another reason.
A bigger screen would have knocked other phones out of the game.
IMHO

Correction... Actually it is 1.5 ghz (but underclocked)

I glad we have the option of buying a case with a kick stand. It seems to be a hit for Sprint customers everyone I know that has Sprint wants one.

It always works like this... The evo 3d is not a breakout first device of its kind like the evo was... It always happens like that.. Look at the droid 2 and 3.. They will never do what the first droid did which put android on the map..

My Opinion:

They could have called it the EVO II and did much better. More focus on the Dual Core Processor and added RAM. Then, mentioning the 3D as a side note. But HTC and Sprint believed 3D would set it apart from the "pack" just like Sprint's 4G was first along with the 4.3 Inch Screen and Dual cameras.

I am saving my upgrade for a phone with dual cores, better battery life and a less sensitive USB Port.

This dual-core processor is really good on battery, after my battery finally settled in I get double digit hours of HEAVY use, or 20+ hours of light to moderate use. Then again, i don't use 4G unless i have to (large file downloads) and i don't use facebook... And its the 3D feature that kills battery. Don't use 3D at all for a day and watch it last, and last... and last...

on the other hand, the next ground breaking phone probably won't be by HTC, someone else will have to think out of the box and slam the competition face first. Things are picking up, I mean, we are hearing quadcore to be out end of 2012/beginning of 2013?!!! saweet!

You also mentioned the font being smaller, I like that, its a perk to the higher-resolution display (which from what i read, produces a more true HD picture in comparison with what we view on our TVs at home). It may be a bit narrower, but we get more web-page real-estate when viewing a page completely zoomed out. I hate panning around when i'm completely zoomed out.

Thanks for your run-down tho, your opinion/post was a good read and appreciated!

I think Sprint goofed when naming the Evo 3D. They tried to feature the 3D aspect of the device but I think for most people it's more of a deterrent than a desirable feature. They should just simply have called it the Evo 2 or something like that.

I was at the Sprint store the other day waiting in line for help with my wife's device and while I was there, there were at least 3 people who passed on the Evo 3D because they didn't like the 3D feature. Trying to be of help, I pointed out to them that you can turn off the 3D, but one of them said, then why pay extra for it? Regardless of whether this customer was wrong or not in his way of thinking, I believe most regular consumers think this way. The Evo 3D may have had more mass appeal if they simply touted the dual core feature and Sense 3.0.

That's just my 2 cents based on my observations.

How about the fact that the evo 3d is $199 and you can get a evo 4g for $29 at Radioshack. Consumers can't justify spending the extra $$ for the extra features. Especially since the 3d is the focal feature and it hurts peoples eyes when they first try it.

Most people just see 3dand dont know how it plays into the phone.. Hell the battery life and processor alone is worth the price!!

Well yeah, anyone who thought this would be a "breakout" device like the EVO4G is delusional. Its just an nice update to that revolutionary device. When I got the EVO4G, i was upgrading from a G1. This time around, the market is flooded with great devices. The iphone set the tone for smartphones..The EVO4G took it a step further setting the tone for android and even windows devices. Now everything has a big screen and front facing camera.

I think it would be unreasonable to expect the EVO3D to be like the EVO4G in terms of shock and awe. Guess they could have threw a 13megapixel cam on there? Better screen? More internal memory..super thin profile? but none of that is groundbreaking like a big a** screen or a kickstand, or 4G, or video calling.

I also agree with someone who said they should not have named it the 3D. I feel like the general population is still very iffy about 3D. Don't get me wrong, it is cool, and I get a little kick out of it, but I certainly did not by it for the 3D.

Lots of ppl I talk to are confused by this phone, they are not sure if the whole interface is in 3D or what. They kind of have this impression that the 3D plays a major part, when it doesn't. So people sound hesitant because of possible discomfort. Some kind of talk it down as bullsh*it and gimmicky. And have this mentality that if it isn't like movie theater 3D with glasses, then it ain't 3D. All I can tell them is to go see for yourself or play with my phone. But even just playing with the phone for a little bit is not enough. Hell it took me a little while to get used to it, and to get the hang of it.

I agree with most people here. We all got the Evo 3D, not because of the 3D but because of the specs! 1.2 ghz Dual core, 1 GB of Ram, more internal storage, better display resolution, bigger battery, and Sense 3.0. The 3D was just an added feature!

However, consumers not in the know see the name Evo 3D and assume the worst. I think the marketing should take its focus off the 3D and simply talk about the power and functionality of the device. Then mention 3D at the end as an option. This may sell better. If I were a Salesman, I would say to any customer asking looking to get an Evo that the new an improved one is out. The battery last longer, you got a much better display and resoulution, it fits better in the hand, you got almost 2.5 times the processing power, more app storage, and more ram. I would show them the new UI compared to the OG Evo, and then, When they are impressed, show them the 3D functionality. Sold and Sold.
