The google account icon is missing from my android homepage.

Google maps starts but almost immediately stops working and a dialogue boss opens telling me to turn on Sync but when I try to sign in it tells me there is already an account by that name.

Welcome to Android Central! Has this always been your phone? Are you borrowing someone else's?

Go to Settings>Accounts (in the system settings) and look at the Google account. Is it yours there, or someone else's?
