News The Huawei Mate XT is a feat of engineering, but is a tri-fold phone necessary?

Honestly, I feel like foldables are still very much a gimmick these days... And I think focus should be on maximising the potential of those before we move on to new foldable designs.

I have a friend that had a Fold 5 (Samsung). He's switching back to the S24 as soon as he can afford it. He tells me that most apps don't yet take advantage of the inner display. And switching between displays can be a PITA.

ETA: That said, I do look forward to seeing just how far Google, Samsung, and even Apple eventually, can take the foldable concept. As they do excite me. I just feel they're not quite there yet.

That Pixel 9 Pro Fold is just so tempting... so tempting....

It's all a matter of preference. I traded my Samsung Fold 5 in for the S24 Ultra. And while it was an amazing phone, I just missed the inner screen of the Fold. So I got the Fold 6. It's rare that an app on my phone won't use the full inner display, the app may need to restart from outer to inner, but still works, and you learn quickly which apps are compatible with switching while open.

I tried the Google Fold 1 last year and after 8 hours it was unusable to me. The only apps that were compatible with their inner screen were most Google apps, not all, but most. There was actually LESS customization than my Samsung. Samsung has spent more than 6 years making the foldable device and apps work together. If the Google Pixel Fold 2 is your first foldable, you probably won't miss any of the features Samsung added. But if you are coming from a Samsung device, you will notice them.
